===============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> I once injured my arm throwing popups for her offspring, nor
GJ> Not a good thing for a professional violist to do.
ML> Different motions, thank goodness. The injury had no effect on my
 ML> professional life.

Very fortunate. I trust you took that as a warning not to throw
popups too often..

GJ> To obtain maximum horizontal range on level ground, a projectile has
GJ> to be fired at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal.

ML> That assumes of course equal efficiency of projection from
ML> all angles. For some reason I produce the greatest P with an
ML> angle exceeding 70o - a peculiarity of my arm musculature and
 ML> movement no doubt.

Maybe if you were tilted forward to an angle of 25 degrees from the
vertical before firing....

GJ> What would indicate the direction from whence came the projectile
GJ> which impacted on the wee Mazda, would be the orientation of the dent
GJ> on the bonnet (hood). I would expect it to be somewhat oval in shape,
GJ> with the axis directed towards one side or other of the road.

ML> It was a jagged set of scratches going from about 160 to 340
ML> (0 being front of the car) - consistent, in my estimation,
ML> with an irregular object lobbed from the direction of the right
 ML> of the automobile.

That is most peculiar, as it would imply that the projectile was fired
from behind the car, and a considerably higher speed than the car was
travelling at! If, otoh, the scratches were from 340 to 160 degrees,
which would be far more likely, the launcher would have been on the
left side of the car.

Assuming the car was travelling at 50 mph (using your achaic units),
the missile would have been travelling at a horizontal velocity at
right angles to the direction of car travel of 18 mph, coming from a
distance of only about 20 feet. This would be commensurate with a
stone being thrown from the wheels of a truck passing in the opposite
direction.

GJ> I look forward to seeing the results of you exercising that skill,
 GJ> this coming November.
ML> The best I could do was row 37J and K. We could get to Taipei
ML> in seats betwen row 6 and 25 (I was looking at 14 to 17, my
ML> favorites), but then it would cost $800 apiece to get from
 ML> Taipei to Adelaide.

My heart will bleed for you, all the time you are suffering in row 37.

In Melbourne, the Duty Free shops there are reasonable. The allowable
maximum per person is 2.25 litres of any alcoholic drinks.
