Ärende: How To Get A Fridge

We've had a small Whirlpool refrigerator that came with the house.
It's kind of a little thing, and it's been jammed with stuff. When
I have to chill a pot of soup or a tray of chocolates for dipping,
I've had to use the back mud room, or the cab of my truck in the cold
weather.  There just isn't any room to spare in that little "Princess"
model.

Meanwhile, over at Home Depot, there's been a big GE side-by-side with
temp controls, water, and ice on the door, standing on clearance.  It
was a custom order that the client returned because it was too big for
their kitchen.  It has been there since October, standing quietly and
having a few more dollars knocked off its price week by week.

Maryanne and I really liked it.  26 cubic feet - plenty of room inside -
nice stainless steel doors that show fingerprints beautifully, slide-out
shelves to help you fetch the crap at the back that you forgot you put
in there, big bins, and so on.  But there were only three electric outlets
in the whole kitchen.  One has an extension cord in it running upstairs
to the bedrooms, one had the Princess fridge plugged into it, and the
last one alternated between coffee maker and toaster because we can't
run both at once on that circuit anyway.

Anyway, on Sunday we spoke to a salesman at Home Depot.  The fridge
was now discounted about $600.  We went in with cash, looked the 
fridge over yet again, and The Boss (Maryanne, of course) approved
the purchase.  Alas!  The icemaker was gone!  No problem, though -
they knocked off another $100 off the price of the fridge and then
ordered the ice maker at no cost to us, to be delivered directly to
the house.

HD doesn't deliver clearance merchandise, so I called Roger to give
me a hand with bringing the damn thing home.  We arranged to pick up
the fridge on Monday, Home Depot tagged it for the next day's Will 
Call, and we went home.

Sunday night after supper, I ran two new circuits to the kitchen.
The first one went directly from the breaker to the outlet for
the fridges, and is dedicated for the refrigerators (with a 
junction box in the cellar so I can branch off of it later if 
desired.)  The second circuit goes to a second outlet in the
same box which can be used for the microwave or small 
appliances; that one has a branch to an outlet by the kitchen 
door (where the microwave actually is right now) and another
branch to the pantry.  Lynn gave me a hand running the wires
through the walls - she caught the fishtape and helped pull
the lines - and to keep the inconvenience to the family as
low as possible, I waited until everyone went to bed before I
killed the power at the service panel to install the new breakers.
It's fun working in the panel in the middle of the night with
a flashlight in your mouth. [g]

Monday night, Roger came over and we headed out to HD to pick up
the fridge.  We got it home safely only to find that it was a little
wider than we thought.  We took off the doors of the fridge and
the doors leading to the kitchen, but it wasn't enough.  We had
to take the door hinges off of the refrigerator.  Then we had to
take the door hinges off of the doorsills of the house!  The fridge
at that point was 30 inches from front surface to back surface
(coils are on the bottom) and the kitchen doors were 30 1/2 
inch wide.  With a 90 degree turn from the mud room to the kitchen 
door.  It was tight, but we did it.

The new big fridge is humming away next to the little one.  I'll be 
hooking up the water supply when the icemaker comes.  In the meantime, 
we're keeping both refrigerators, so we have an extra "utility"
fridge for beverages and miscellaneous use.  Right now, Lynn has all 
the shelves filled with the chocolates she's making to give as
Christmas gifts (the centers have to chill before they can be
dipped.)

Now I'm turning my attention to the pantry...
