That was an entertaining challenge, something that people
sometimes pull on me for the sake of amusement and amazement.
I did better when I saw better, though. I once showed up at
a dress rehearsal and discovered that I was expected to play
the solo part of the Grand Canyon Suite. I actually did not
do an exceptionally good job either at the rehearsal or at
the performance.

Two challenges I did not take up:

A quartet I was in played for the wedding of a semi-obscure
conductor. During the course of the reception afterward, the
quite intoxicated groom requested the Debussy String Quartet.
I was all ready to go, but the other three chickened out.

I once showed up at a memorial service for a violinist; his
colleague, also a violinist, chose the music, including the
entire Bach double concerto for oboe and violin. I knew I
was expected to bring an instrument (so I brought a violin
and a viola). Sat myself down in the midst of a crowd of
musicians. It turned out there was no solo violinist; I got
ready to get up and strut my stuff, but my then-girlfriend,
a notable prig (several of the women I've gone out with have
been; the current and permanent one is, of course, not), told
me that it was hubristic and wrong of me to think I should/could
do the job. Everyone looked sort of nonplussed at there not being
a soloist, and the organizer eventually took the part, falling all
over himself several times in the process. Afterward, he came to
me and said that I should have done the job, and I am told that
the printed program said that I was going to do so. I should have
left this girlfriend right away, but I was stupid or softhearted
and lasted over half another decade before throwing in the towel.

I wonder if someone who could eat a whole veal shank would be
so uncommon as someone who could eat 1/2 oz of crushed chiles.

     Title: Katjaug Sauce
Categories: Indonesian, sauces, spices
  Servings: 2 cups

           Clarified butter
      1 md onion, finely sliced
      2    cloves garlic, finely
           chopped
      1 ts Kentjoer (Indonesian ground
           spices)
    1/2 ts shrimp sauce
      1 ts brown sugar
           Freshly ground salt and
           Sambal Oelek to taste
    1/2 c  peanut butter
    1/2 c  coconut milk
    1/2 c  water

Pour clarified butter into heated saucepan and add onion. Add garlic and
fry. To this, add ground spices, shrimp sauce and brown sugar. Season
with salt and chili pickle. Increase heat and add peanut butter. Stir
briskly. Reduce heat to low and add coconut milk and 1/2 cup water. Stir
thoroughly and remove from heat. Add pan juices collected from skewers
to sauce and serve in a sauce boat alongside meat.
