==================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> I'm still struggling to continue with my last travel diary, but
GJ> I will attempt to prepare a special edition for Echo readers, omitting
GJ> most of the boring stuff. An interesting challenge.

ML> Whatever on earth does that mean. Why bother trying to figure
ML> out what will bore whom? I am making two versions of mine, focusing
ML> on the one hand on the food and drink experience and on the other on
ML> the flying and drink experience. They actually won't be that much
ML> different aside from terminology issues and the cast of characters
ML> (I don't see that the FIDO Cooking echo is going to be interested
ML> in the turbulence at FL370 on the way SYD-LAX or that the MoreMiles
ML> crowd is going to know who Kevin, Glen, and Greg are).

I had thought of my diary that Echo readers would not be all that
interested in what my niece and her new fiancee did on a pre-wedding
honeymoon - such as shopping for souvenirs. Some of my rough notes
are difficult to decipher, being partly obscured by food and wine
stains, or deteriorated hand-writing, and not helped by youngest
grand-daughter recently scribbling over some pages.

GJ> I was protected from ill effects by frequent hydration from a "Darwin
GJ> Stubby", a bottle of beer shaped like a normal 385ml stubby, but
GJ> larger - 2 litres - which someone had brought.

ML> Does one decant into smaller containers or just hoist the
 ML> half-gallon to one's lips at intervals?

The latter method would be in accordance with the approved Darwin
social graces, but I was fortunate to have someone (Murray) who could
keep my glass topped up, returning the bottle to the fridge between
times. After all, with an ambient temp of 106F, anything outside the
fridge heats up quite quickly.

GJ> Currently there is some excitement in staid old Adelaide. According
GJ> to the radio, the city's leading madam, Stormy Summers, is under an
GJ> eviction order for non-payment of rent, but she has welded her doors
GJ> shut and is haranguing police from her balcony, while two fire
GJ> engines, police and an ambulance stand by.

ML> What was her justification for not paying rent?

Not known, although doubtless she had some good reason - possibly the
landlord (Adelaide City Council) had raised the rent without (in her
eyes) justification. After winning the first round on Friday as
result of her husband judiciously spilling some petrol by the
welded-up door, with an extension to the order allowing her to stay
until Monday, she has begun moving out to new premises in Adelaide, so
the eviction order has now been further extended to Wednesday.

ML> I'm doubting if one can make any kind of equivalence between film
ML> and paint. With paint, I imagine that heat would be an equally
ML> important influence. Anyhow, the capacity of the pigment to absorb
ML> light energy is limited - the percentage of light reflected gives
 ML> some clue about that.

The photo-chemical effect of light on paint is well known in
Australia, where the dry air results in a high ultra-violet content.
Pigments, particularly blue, bleach, and polymers powder. White paint
containing titanium oxide best resists this effect.

GJ> I presume the rice is pre-rinsed, and the quantity of boiling water
GJ> measured to suit the amount of rice?
ML> I don't know about rinsing. You do realize that most American
ML> recipes do not call for rinsing.

Most American recipes call for long-grain rice, which contains very
little rice flour, and doesn't clump in a chop-sticks friendly way.

Instant rice

ML> Judging from what I hear, nothing could make it more palatable.

There have been disagreements on what is acceptable in the way of
flavour and texture, so the results of the proposed picnic rice-taste
by a panel of objective and dedicated tasters should be revealing. As
well as the large range of rices to be evaluated, testing should be
done of alternative preparation methods, ranging from Ian's disgusting
European post-cook rinsing and oven drying, to the standard absorption
method used by over half of the world.
