======================
Hi Carol,

RH> Just a bit of inter-service teasing. Army probably has the toughest P
RH> program of all other services except the Marines (when they are on
RH> land). The Air Force program was very minimal for years; it still
RH> doesn't have as much as an Army one. The Navy probably has a tough
RH> program in basic and AIT (or whatever the Navy calls it--Advanced
RH> Individual Training for the Army) getting recruits into shape. And,
RH> yes, the ladders, etc on ships can be just as much exercise going up a

CS> True. Navy has not so much of a PT program. We tend to get a workout
CS> though just like you say, walking around on a ship <g>. On an average
CS> day, I will traverse at least 24 stories of ladders. Thats 8 just to
CS> get onboard, down to berthing, and up to my office. 16 to eat lunch,
CS> 8 more to get changed and go home. Probably add another 16 so I can
 CS> take a pee-break <g> to make it 40.

Up and down all the time. But, as I recall, most ladders were not that
long, usually less than 10 risers. You'd probably be in good shape to
do one of these Empire State Building or Sears Towers runs. (G)

CS> I did zone inspection for one of the other Masterchief's the day we
CS> pulled back in. It was engineering spaces at the aft end. To get to
CS> them, you have to climb down these vertical ladders (real adders,
CS> straight up and down) 6 stories then back up, over to the next drop
CS> down, and another 6 down then 6 up. I had 5 spaces to check on, not
CS> interconnecting down below so had to come all the way up each time.
CS> Bob's knees were bothering hm so I did his inspection for him.

I don't think I coud have handled it, at least not now. Called the
ortho doctor's office a bit ago; he and the foot/ankle specialist
haven't been able to mesh schedules to arrainge a meeting. Guess that
means I'll go into 2007 without any resolution on the foot.

CS> So like, 12x5=60 stories. Yeah, I was a little tired at the end <g>.
CS> The difference though is I am used tot hat sort of thing. I wouldnt
CS> be suprised if many of the others here just couldnt make it or at the
CS> least, would be very sore the next day. Now, ask me to go running,
CS> and I aint so good at that!

I'd be weak in the knees, at least; probably sore in other areas as
well.

JM> something. Anyway, I realize Navy people
JM> do get a lot of physical challenge, but
 JM> it's more in 3 dimensions.

CS> Definately. Vertical dimensions. I get to go climbing Friday (leave
CS> ends) if the weather is good. Delayed some antenna maintenance and we
CS> are pretty much on a stand-down sort of thing. I need to help out my
CS> PO3 as the PO1 who has duty with us is scared of heights, so I told
CS> him not to worry and I'd go up. Aft mast VHF whips. I'll be about
CS> 100ft up and 30ft out on an upper yardarm for around 2 hours.

Sounds like fun. Hopefully the weather won't be too rotten. Is that
your version of a space walk like the shuttle guys are doing? (G)
