I figure if you have the $$ to waste, go ahead. My problem with
those big houses in the burbs is that people sort of make them
their castles - they're isolating; plus they are a huge waste
of resources, which I object to somewhat more than wasting $$.
Of course, the banks try to convince people they have the $$
to waste, whereas in reality they don't.

Amusing in a sick way that people buy these huge barns that
they can't afford to heat - you go into them and the atmosphere,
both temperature and psychological, freezes the marrow in your
bones. They are chained to their houses, and the only hope for
their future is if there's a huge run on real estate and they
can cash out with enough extra so they can go retire to Des
Moines or someplace.

Funny thing is that a year ago this appeared in the United
Airlines magazine, which is read I would guess by most of
the people who have those big ugly houses:

  You've seen them as you look out the airplane window just
  after takeoff or before landing - rows and rows of huge
  houses sprouting on treeless cul-de-sacs that spread for
  miles around cities in the U.S. This is the 21st-century
  idea of domestic bliss. Or is it? How many people are
  really content with that hourlong commute to work and
  the vast acres of indoor space, much of it unused except
  for the occasional party? ... When you make more money,
  naturally you want a better house. And, for many Americans,
  "better" is equated with "bigger," so they build a house
  in suburbia with more space in it than their last one. But
  after moving in, filled with expectations of a better life,
  many wonder why they aren't any more satisfied than they
  were with their last house. The only real changes are
  higher energy bills, more rooms to clean, and a longer ride

BONE MARROW CANAPES
Yield: 6 servings (12 canapes)

4 3" beef marrow bones
1/3 c finely chopped shallots
2/3 c dry red wine
1 Tb finely chopped parsley
1 ts fresh lemon juice
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 baguette, about 2" in diameter.

Preheat oven to 400 F. Wrap bones individually in a double
thickness of cheesecloth, then in foil. Place in a roasting
pan, and bake for 30 min.

Combine shallots and wine in a small nonreactive saucepan.
Reduce almost completely, about 20 min. Set aside.

When bones are cool enough to be handled, remove
marrow and discard bones.

Chop the marrow finely. Add shallot mixture, parsley,
lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.

From the baguette, cut 12 slices 1/2" thick. Toast until
golden. Mound the marrow mixture on the toasts, and serve
as an hors d'oeuvre. The marrow mixture may also be served
without toast as a topping for filet mignon or grilled fish.
