Hmmph!  Dead boring stuff.  Not even Marmite on the toast?

Even more boring.  I am disappointed that the traditional British
breakfast of kippered herrings and sausages that I used to read about
when I was young is no more.  The best breakfasts that I have had
recently have been in pensions and hostels in Prague and Budapest,
with choices of hot and cold wursts, several breads and cheeses,
spreads, yoghurts, cereals, and proper coffee.  The Italians tended to
go for the coffee and croissant style of breakfasts, and the Greeks
coffee and pastries, like spinach and cheese pies.

Some Brits still knew about proper breakfasts...

      Title: Jugged Kippers
 Categories: Breakfast, Fish, British, Smoked
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
           Kippers
           Butter
           Lemons
 
  Cut the heads and tails off the kippers. Put them in a jug, head end
  first, and pour boiling water into the jug to fill it, making sure
  the kippers remain upright. Cover the jug with a plate and leave for
  4 to 5 minutes. Pour off the water, and put the kippers on the plate
  with a knob of butter and a lemon wedge each. Eat some bread and
  butter with it--it helps the bones go down! Good brown bread and
  unsalted butter are best.
