My terminology is probably faulty, but it would seem that there would be
a difference between a deployment (such as to Iraq or Afganistan) and a
duty station or whatever one would call a posting to a non-combat area. 
But I guess in the case of deployment, the family is (almost?) always
left behind, so it isn't really a move.

Unknown.  I didn't get to know my father's paternal aunts as well as I
did his maternal ones... and my granddad died when I was in my teens, so
I never really knew enough to ask even him then...  Perhaps a bit of it
seeped into my genetic makeup, though... (G)

True enough... and not when he went into the service, either, unless he
were on KP...  ;)

I'm thinking that there is a combination of nature and nurture, along
with circumstance, to be able to explain it...  :)  I have to admit,
that although we've lived in one spot for over 30 years (and on one
level, I'm happy enough NOT to have to pack up and move), I get the urge
to wander, too...  Richard isn't nearly so, he'd rather just stay put,
and his idea of an ideal vacation is to just go to the camp property we
have and veg for however long we can manage it (along with doing the
upkeep necessary, of course).  I agree on the vacation part, but I do
also want to be going places... mostly we've kept that urge satisfied by
his bankrolling my genealogy trips, which for many years I did in the
company of his mother.  :)

Exactly.
