One thing you might be able to pass on to her is what I've been told by
a number of doctors...  If you use pain relievers (even the narcotic
types) for the relief of pain, and just as needed, you are exceedingly
unlikely to ever become addicted to them.  There's something in the way
the drugs act to break the pain at the source that both makes them
effective and protects from them becoming addictive in most cases.  The
docs also remind that enjoying the relief the drugs provide, and then
needing another dose as scheduled, does not an addiction make.  I hear
you, though, on not being able to tell her how to run her life... one
can only pass on information and hope it helps... :)
