Hi Ruth!

> Saw something on CNN this morning about the "fire water" in Windsor.(G)

You know, I saw your message earlier today and checked on CNN quick.. no sign
of mention of Windsor .. could be the story scrolled off earlier than I got to
the page (g)... more running around today, though now and again I did make it
to the system to take care of some things & was able to post a few messages
here...

Anyway, could have been about the great oil deals for drilling on some
properties in Windsor I figure. Fire water :)

Sadly enough for the local area, the Marcellus Shale Formation is here. It is
about 54,000 square miles in area, and may contain ten times as much natural
gas as the current largest U.S. field, the Barnett Shale Formation in Texas.
It's somewhat crazy.. if it goes through, some people will be able to lease
their property to the drilling firms for funds varying between $25 to $10,000
per acre plus a 12 % to 87%* royalty fee all "dependent on the savviness and
negotiating skills of the land owner and/or their agent" as one minister in the
area put it.. :( It's worrisome if you take a look at what these drilling
firms 'do' to the land and wildlife where they drill. Thankfully, we aren't
one of those properties. There are some that would qualify outside the village
(have to have enough property). So it's not affecting the Village of Winsor..
the "Town of Windsor" though is huge and that's where people will be that would
be involved in it. Hey, maybe the village of Windsor will get "natural gas" as
opposed to the propane we have to buy now (g).

>> normal ground-level. I use raised beds mostly because it's easier to
>> keep all the idiot animals out of my garden (grin).

> Good reasoning. But it's just the right height for nibbling by bear or
> deer. (G)

Ah... couple things :) The beds are in a fenced area (about 4ft. high) and the
dogs (two ferocious man-eating black dogs (bg)) go in and out of the area at
will since we have a dog-door on our back entrance. Haven't seen anything come
anywhere near the garden beds since putting them in, and I'm sure that's
because of my little 'angels'.

>> > Do you use black plastic also?
>> No, I don't use that. More weeds, but not a big deal to me.

> As long as you don't mind. I don't know if Dad used it every year; I
> think he wasn't really that over all happy with it.

The weeds are a big deal because they are so few and because they are easy to
pull. I have one bed where the asparagus is planted where I let the weeds
mostly take over last year kind of purpose... I didn't want to disturb the
roots I'd planted. The asparagus plants are doing well in that bed, so I
planted my blue lake green beans in there and the asparagus doesn't seem to
care (g). Next year, I'll let the asparagus have the whole bed (actually late
in the summer this year).

>> > I know my dad used to use peat moss; I
>> It really helps the soil retain water, and the garden plants love it.
> And in tight water times, water retention is a big plus. We've had a
> lot of thunder and lightning the past few days but little rain from it.

Know what you mean.. It's been the same here off and on. One day we did have a
downpour though..

>>> And for your bracciole as well, should be enough?

>> > Should be, if we don't go way over board. That will be mixed with
>> cheese > so we could always mix in a bit more cheese. (G)

>> Should be fine really - but breadcrumbs are cheaper than Italian

> True; I'm planning to use about 2 cups of crumbs for the meat balls; the
> rest will go in the bracciole.

Sounds fine :)

>> cheese :) :) I actually found some breadcrumbs at Giant Market that
>> doesn't have HFCS in it.. I was amazed.. it is the ONLY one I have
>> found. Every single other brand puts that garbage in :( The company

> Who needs HFCS in bread crumbs (unless it's the sweetener used for
> making the bread)? I'm reading more labels these days and seeing HFCS in
> so many things..........

Yes, I know, it's the same here :(. I'm hoping the Barbecue sauce that Dave
mentioned, and these bread crumbs are a sign of the coming return to sugar.. we
figured it would happen soon enough since the price of corn is so high. Bye-bye
HFCS (and good riddance) (g).

>> is Old World Italian Bread Crumbs.

> My bread crumbs are made from my home made bread; the sweetener I use
> for it is raw (turbinado) sugar.

Since I don't use my breadmachine that often, I don't use sugar in recipes for
bread as often as you probably do.

Take care,
Janis
