Ärende: Alaska Trip report 5
============================
June 17th Tuesday -- arrive in Skagway, Alaska.

Morning call at 5:30. Breakfast in the Lido Room, as usual and then
disembark the ship. Our Alaskan Tour Group was now back together and
took a bus tour of Skagway. This is a small town of maybe 800 people in
the winter, growing to 20,000 in the summer. The town itself seems to
have one main street with boardwalks and mobs and mobs of tourists. We
had some time to walk around and scope out shops. We found a local hole
in the wall bakery and each had a Cinnamon Bun - baked fresh - huge and
extremely good. VVVG.

Dinner was provided at the Jewell Gardens located on the Clark Farm site
just outside of Skagway. We had preordered on the bus earlier in the
day. A Roasted Red Pepper/Tomato Soup was followed by an Organic Green
Salad. The entree choices were Roasted Chicken Breast with Rice VG or
Spinach/cheese Quiche VVG. Gail's Quiche was better than my chicken.
Dessert was a chocolate cake, Good. After dinner we toured some of the
back roads of Skagway and back to the hotel.

June 18th Wed -- On the road to Whitehorse, Yukon.

Morning call at 5:30 - bags outside door by 6:30. Breakfast was a
buffet at the hotel covered by the tour. Standard choices.

The first part of the trip was a narrow gauge railroad through very
scenic country, and then we were picked up by a coach. We kept the same
coach and driver for the next three days.

Lunch was a buffet provided by the tour - typical selections,
ham/turkey, salad, etc. etc and pies for dessert.

Stopped at Uncommon Journey's, which is a Husky Kennel. A beautiful
sight with dozens of Alaskan Husky dogs of various combinations. The
couple breed and train sled dogs and also run a winter tourist adventure
program. The Alaskan Husky was defined by them to be a mixed breed, as
opposed to the Siberian Husky and Malamute which were pure strain
breeds. Very good presentation then we got to walk in the outdoor area
and pet the dogs, who were very people socialized. There was a
demonstration of how these dogs work by hooking up 6 of the dogs and
having them pull a ATV through the property. These dogs live to race
and were enjoying every minute.

Evening in Whitehorse was to be dinner on our own, but we skipped
dinner. We did attend a theatrical production - Follies Show put on at
the hotel. Cute show - well done.

June 18 Thursday -- on the road to Beaver Creek, Yukon.

Once again, Breakfast Buffet at the hotel in Whitehorse - standard stuff.

Long bus ride up the Alaskan Highway - can't imagine it when it was not
paved. Beautiful scenery - some wildlife sited.

Dinner was connected with a Yukon Review at the complex we stayed at.
Large very rustic venue with a burning big fire pit in the middle of the
room (open hole in roof for smoke to go out of). Elevated stage at the
front of this octagonal building. Waiting as you walked into the room
was a table with makings for s'mores sitting close to the fire. Perfect
marshmallow sticks sitting at the end of the tables.

There were five tour groups there that evening each tour having probably
40 or more people in its group.

Dinner was served family style. Salad, roasted chicken, Beef Barley
Stew, Rice, Rolls and baked Alaska for dessert. You could buy beer or
wine from the bar. Dinner was well done and generous.

A very good show - probably the best of the lot so far. All these shows
were different - and all the performers enjoy what they are doing.
