Ärende: acid and stuff 675

ML> To help me sleep today after a tasting session of numerous
ML> chocolates and two kinds of coffee products, I poured myself
ML> a big tot of rum, to which I added 1/3 the volume of fresh-
ML> squeezed lime juice. Clean Dave remarked that if he'd drunk
ML> that quantity of either rum or lime juice, he'd have a bad
ML> case of heartburn - but I felt nothing. Didn't help me sleep,
ML> either. I'm about to try to find some Benadryl.

Well, at least you don't have problems with acid, then. :) Back when I
was scoping out my problem with coffee, if I'd had too much too late (ie
any at all after about noon or so, with decaf, or even a small bit first
thing in the morning of the real stuff) and so I couldn't sleep for the
buzz and spin and jitters, I used to use yoga breathing and relaxation
techniques to calm me down enough to get to sleep. Thankfully, it
worked like a charm... eventually.. :)

ML> On the other hand, those cherries are getting worse and worse
 ML> for me.

Sigh...

ML> Society should reward good deeds and punish evil ones. That's the
ML> gist of both the civil and criminal systems. The problem with the
ML> economic impetus I cited above is that there will always be those
ML> who try to game the system.

Yup.

ML> I had a friend who was at a laundromat and slipped on a wet spot
ML> and hurt her kiester ... she actually hurt herself pretty badly,
ML> and in fact the fall contributed to increasing problems in the
ML> "for want of a nail a shoe was lost" vein that may have ended up
ML> killing her a decade later. She sued the heck out of the laundromat
ML> and actually got a sizable settlement; I thought that was wrong, as
ML> when one goes to a place where there's a lot of water, one should
ML> take some extra care not to slip, and if one does, too bleeping bad.

I'm sorry she got hurt, but I agree, she was herself negligent in not
exercising reasonable care in a place known to be potentially hazardous,
even if normally there isn't water causing slippery conditions... And
this is, of course, part of what I refered to about our increasingly
litigious society... sue whoever for whatever happens to you, even if
you are mainly, mostly or even entirely at fault for the results.

ML> I didn't speak to her for quite some time after that, and hers was
ML> a borderline (ethically speaking) case.

I at least would have had a difficult time discussing any part of the
details of the said incident and its aftermath... maybe on totally
different aspects of living... if we had been close enough friends...

A sister of a friend of mine had a similarly ethically suspect case...
she sued a local supermarket because she fell in the parking lot, having
tripped or something in/on a negligible unevenness of the pavement.
From all accounts, including hers, I couldn't see how the supermarket
was to blame, except possibly peripherally. It primarily was her fault
in getting out of the car without paying attention to her surroundings.
Knowing the woman, I almost wondered if she hadn't manufactured the
situation in order to find something to sue someone for in order to get
some sort of substantial money... Fortunately for me, I didn't normally
have any contact with her, so I didn't have to avoid speaking to her...
