-> DD> Environmental Protection Agency and their air pollution standards.
-> DD> am waiting for them to set standards for home lawn mowers - those
-> DD> tiny engines that power lawn maintenance machines are some of the
-> DD> worst polluters in the current mechanical world.
-> They certainly do produce very undesirable pollution, but nowhere near
-> as many litres of pollution than is churned out by power stations
 -> burning high-sulphur coal.

DD> Much coal in the US - and here in the Illinois area is laying fallow
DD> until some reliable desulphurisation method is devised. Many coal
DD> powered generating stations sitting right at a mine mouth burn coal
DD> brought in on looooooong trains of rail cars ... even given stack
DD> scrubbers, etc. to remove excess pollution from the effluvia of the
 DD> "native" coal.

As Australia is a major user and exporter of coal, it is responsible
for a large share of the world's atmospheric CO2. For ages there has
been talk of "sequestration" - removing CO2 from power station stacks,
liquifying it, and storing it "forever" deep underground, where in
theory the pressure will keep it in liquid form. So far, this has not
been successfully achieved. My own opinion is that the energy required
to do this would be more than what the power stations produced, so it
will remain just an interesting theoretical concept.

Eventually the public will have no alternative to accepting nice,
clean, nuclear power, just as it will learn to enjoy recycled water.

Got it. I'll look that up later.

DD> I had an aquaintance who "knew it all" about motorcycles. One day he

Lovely!! Yes, I remember the confusion that American controls caused
to the riders brought up on Pommy bikes. Some of the continentals were
different again, with left leg starters.

-> DD> Sometimes the best thing about the "good old days" is that they are

-> Probably. I doubt if we could survive them again.
 DD> I know I couldn't.

Good to see that you recovered sufficiently to survive the Picnic.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Gustum De Praecoquis (Starter With Apricots)
 Categories: None
      Yield: 1 servings

1 kg Firm ripe apricots or
           -nectarines
    200 ml White wine
    250 ml Passum
      1 Peppermint tea bag; (portion
           -for one cup)
           Pepper
           Liquamen or salt
           Cornstarch; a little vinegar
           -and honey

Wash, cut and stone apricots. Put them with a little cold water in a
pan. Ground pepper and dried mint (that's where the tea bag comes
handy...), add Liquamen, honey, Passum, wine and vinegar. Pour into
the pan with a little oil. Cook approximately 20 minutes on small to
moderate heat. After it boils add a bit of cornstarch to thicken the
sauce, sprinkle with pepper and serve.
