Sunday breakfast: raisin spice muffins, bacon and eggs, and
multiple kinds of toast. Good and plain. We were all easy,
so we all had over easy; Burt, watching his cholesterol,
or something, had only one yolk but two whites; I,
suicidal [small](not really)[/small], had the extra yolk.

Truthfully, my friend McCully says that as long as the eggs are
one or two days' fresh (and here they were, the henhouse being
an egg's throw from the main house), the lecithin will prevent
any cholesterol from being a problem, that is to say if
cholesterol is ever a problem.

Italian cookies at Main Street: Stella D'Oros, a good brand.
Also some hermits. More chocolate (heavens, I brought a lot
of the stuff).

Being antsy by nature, I made lunch, octopus with Chinese broccoli
(ingredients from Shenk) and lamb curry (using trimmings from the
spiedie meat). Also nuked up the leftover rice from the Chinese
place). I could duplicate the curry but would have a hard time
giving or even following a recipe. Correction. In response to a
request by the resident Eat, I have tried to cobble one together,
which I have posted earlier. No guarantees that it will produce
something similar to what I made unless one tweaks by tasting
several times during the cooking.

Octopus with Chinese broccoli
cat: main, cephalopod, Chinese
servings: 4

1/2 lb octopus
1 Tb baking soda
1 Tb rice wine
1 Tb soy sauce
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 Tb rice vinegar
1 bn Chinese broccoli
1 ts sesame oil
oil
2 Tb soy sauce
2 Tb rice wine
cornstarch, optional

Cut the octopus into bite-size pieces, cleaning bits of
brain and digestive tract left after the supposed cleaning
done by minimum wagers in some Asian sweatshop. Rinse well.
Marinate in soda, wine, soy sauce, and garlic for 2 to 4 hr.
Drain off marinade and add rice vinegar.

Separate broccoli stems from leaves, Steam the stems until
tender, about 5 min. Parsteam the leaves about 2 min.

Drain the octopus again, rinse, and pat dry. Fish out the
garlic and reserve.

Arrange the broccoli stems on a platter and drizzle with
sesame oil.

Saute the octopus in very hot oil for a minute or until
the tentacles curl. Add the broccoli leaves and stir-fry
a minute or less; then add soy sauce and rice wine to taste.
Thicken with cornstarch water if you feel the urge to.

There were pounds and pounds of leftovers from the main event.
I had a bunch more turkey and maybe a meatball or five.

Toward the end of the day, it was remembered that the chicken
that Dave and Georgia had left marinating when they had made
their hasty exit (Georgia was hurting badly - she's a hero to
even have ridden all that way from Illinois at all) had to be
cooked. So I called for a fire to be made and fixed

chicken kebabs with rosemary and blackberries (the Drum clan)
- I had been rather put out when it turned out that the
blackberries that I had shelled out real money for were meant for
this dish: I could have made its equal with $1 worth of cheap red
wine instead of the $3.50 of blackberries which I had had to
juice. Anyhow, the dish was duly made and appreciated, and even
I admit that there was a berry aftertaste (though we could have
gotten that from a zinfandel). The marinade, as it had sat
overnight with meat in it, was curdled looking and not fit for
a sauce such as the original recipe had apparently called for.

Dessert was nice and light - watermelon (got by me and Shenk
at the farmers' market).

Interesting day: at the end of it I didn't feel as though
I'd grossly overeaten, even though I may well have done so.
