Picnic 2008

Thursday

We always bring some "snack" munchies to a picnic - so this year we
stopped by one of the stores at the mall and selected:

Harry & Davids Artichoke Salsa, Pomegranate Salsa, and Robert Rothschild
Farm Raspberry Wasabi Dipping Sauce.  We bought pretzel sticks and
Tostitos scoops in NY to use to dip into them.
I agree with all the reviews on these so far. Other than the Wasabi
Dipping Sauce I would not buy those again.

From the Peanut Shop of Williamsburg display at the shop in the mall, we
selected Wasabi Peanuts, Fire Dancer Jalapeno Nuts and another brand
called Ass kicking Honey Roasted Nuts with Habanero Pepper.  My favorite
was the Wasabi Peanuts. The Habanero Nuts were sometimes hot, sometimes
just sweet - but I would buy those again.  The Jalapeno Nuts were very
very mild - would not buy those again.

From the Asian grocery store (H-mart north of Columbia) we brought some
on-site pressed rice cakes. These got hidden on the other kitchen table
amongst many things but were finally spotted by Carol. Last year people
were fascinated watching the rice cakes being made.  They are not like
your usual rice cakes you find in the grocery store - just something
different.

Michael had a huge selection of various chocolate bars - he is always
good at his selections. Everyone would break off small pieces and taste
each.

Thurs Dinner

Moon Star Restaurant has already been reviewed.  If Michael was upset at
Burt's GPS (Jim), he would have gone balistic over our GPS (Marty).
When Ron said where we were going, I heard China Star.  I looked it up
and there was a China Star in Binghamton, so I clicked that in and told
our Marty to take us there -- even though we were following Ron.  Good
thing that we did not lose sight of Ron, because China Star is not Moon
Star!  Our GPS was getting very upset.  "When possible, make a legal
U-turn" and other such remarks:-}}

The Haffly's shared a booth with us.

At our table we shared some steamed dumplings that Steve had ordered. We
sampled each others selection of main course.  Kung Pao Chicken, Twice
Cooked Pork, Beef and Tomato, and finally Three Flavor Chicken.  Stephen
does enjoy hot peppers but he ate one of the hot peppers from the Kung
Pao by itself and suffered a too hot pepper reaction. He did recover and
at the end of the meal tried another hot pepper surrounded by meat and
that went down better. We had brown as well as white rice at the table.
We shared some of the steamed dumplings with the other table as well as
a sampling of each of the main dishes.  We all drank tea.

We sampled Crab/fish belly Soup; salt/pepper shrimp and fried dumplings
from the other table.


Friday

Instead of going to the Spiedie Festival Michael decided to make a
homemade version.  He made Lamb and Chicken Spiedies - both very
flavorful.  It is something we would make ourselves at home.

Cortese Restaurant

A very pleasant Old School Italian Restaurant - very busy.  We were
seated in the back rear room at two tables for our group.  Only
criticism is that the two tables were so close together that the backs
of the chairs were touching each other.

Dale's Chicken Piccata was a two large breast portion - flavorful but
perhaps a tad too much lemon. Plenty of mushrooms and lots of garlic. No
capers.  He started with NE Clam Chowder and had a baked potato as a
side.

Gail's Chicken Soltimbacco - large portion - only ate half of it and
shared the rest. Very heavy on the sherry.  Would have liked more cheese
on the chicken. Started with a house salad with blue cheese dressing and
choose baked broccoli for a side.

The menu was varied enough that everyone could find something they would
enjoy.
