Greedy bunch we are. I hope you at least got a taste of the
"bacon" that I fried up out of the fat cap: it tasted similar.

A couple times since we've had substitutes - durian-flavored
candy or "durian cake" (which is actually dried durian pulp
in a tube shape, and I think it's foul).

The only disadvantage with the aluminum foil trick (you take a thin
band of foil and crimp it around the edge of the pie before baking)
is that it's an improvised shield that you use only once. The
advantage, of course, is that you don't need a specialized tool.

You all should be thankful that I didn't pick up a bottle of this
artificial flavor - A. Dong had a big bottle (3 oz, I think, thus
within the TSA rules - I could have carried on a lethal dose legally)
for the, er, killer price of $1.69. But I thought of the havoc it
would cause in the airport were I to drop my bag accidentally, and
the threat of never being allowed to fly again made me think twice.

Apple bread pudding
cat: allergy, dessert
servings: 4

2 lg apples, peeled, cored
2 c wine (I used red)
1/3 c sugar or to taste
1 ts vanilla
1/2 Tb cinnamon or to taste
1/8 ts salt
3 lg eggs
8 sl bread
butter
cinnamon sugar

Dice apples small. Microwave for a couple min until soft.

Bring wine to the boil; add sugar and cook and stir until
sugar is dissolved and liquid thickens a bit. Off heat,
add vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. 

Beat eggs and stir into cooled wine mixture.

Butter a casserole. Dredge bread in egg mixture; layer
one layer of bread in bottom of the casserole, followed
by half the apples. Dot with butter. Repeat. Finish with
bread (I used a tallish Corning ware with a small
footprint). Pour remaining egg mixture over. Dot with
butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top.

Bake at 250F for 1 hr or until tester comes out just a
little short of clean. Serve with whipped cream for the
non-lactose-intolerant.
