Not that I'm aware of, just hunting for moose and it appears to be
limited to 125 permits issued for those on Ft. Richardson and Elmendorf
AFB with a yearly take of 50-65. This is per a stat I found at ADF&G.
The area where the bear problems are, here in town, have been in a
park. I saw this evening the mayor has closed the trail where the
attacks happened, but not the park itself. As I said to Jim the park is
about 4,000 acres according to what I read in the paper. The attack in
Cooper Landing was at a lodge and I didn't notice where the guy was in
Eagle River other than he was running on a pathway at the time. If you
fireoff something like Googleearth you'll notice that Anchorage itself
is hemmed in on all sides which can't be developed. Part of the reason
the city isn't growing, nowhere to grow to. Running throughout the city
and into the parks surrounding town are a series of greenbelts, bike
trails, walkways used for jogging and creeks which are major traffic
routes for wildlife. Several years ago a jogger was bitten by a coyote.
I joked to some folks down in Florida last winter that we'd solved our
coyote problem...the wolves moved in and started eating them. About two
years ago I spotted a fox running across the street at around noon. The
utility corridor behind our house is about 20' wide and has grass
almost waist high, along with brush at the edges, which is where the
fox was probably headed. The only thing that drives down it is the tree
cutting service the electric company hires, heck I think it's blocked
at one end. We have moose living in the backyard almost the entire
winter. Lots of critters about, I haven't even gotten to the raptors
yet, which are also known to attack humans and pets. Like the raven
that tried to eat our cat, chased it up the stairs and retreated only
when the door was opened by our housesitter trying to find out what all
the noise was about. All of which are reasons why I won't let the cat
out to run around, I'm gonna let the wife turn her cat into a hors
d'orderve.  :-)

      Title: Correze Nut Wine
 Categories: Beverages, Nuts, French
      Yield: 7 Litres
 
      5 l  Red wine *
      1 kg Sugar
     12    Walnut leaves
     30    Green walnuts **
      1 l  White Alcohol (45%)
 
  NB * Decent quality, 12 deg minimum, plenty of body.
   ** Gathered at "pickling" stage, when the walnuts are
  of full size, but JUST before the hard shell start to
  form. In Correze the 14th July is traditional. A
  stainless steel needle should be able to transpierce
  the nut.
  
  Wearing gloves, crush the nuts with a mallet (in a
  thick polythene bag) and put them into a container
  which will be large enough to hold all the ingredients
  (7 litres min). Wash the leaves and cut them into
  small pieces. Add them in turn to the container. Add
  the remaining ingredients, seal with screw cap or
  cork, and keep a year, shaking once a month - more
  frequently at first, to dissolve the sugar. Decant or
  filter into bottles. Some years, the nut wine will
  need keeping 6 months before being ready to drink,
  being very tannic beforehand.
