Protip:  Rosemary is a tender perennial; it grows well in a
Mediterranean climate or as a garden annual here, but it's a
relatively slow grower.  You may wish to plant it in a pot that
you can bring in when the weather gets chilly, especially if
you have a sunny window where it can winter over.

Thyme is an excellent ground cover and not only tolerates bad
soil and adverse conditions, it seems to thrive in them (I've
picked wild thyme from sandy, rocky stretches at the seashore
where even the grass has a hard time.)  You can plant a little
around the foundation of your house, and even in places where
you have a hard time growing moss, the thyme should take and
give you years' worth of flavor.  In flower boxes, thyme will
quickly spread to cover the entire open area of soil, which makes
it kind of useful to keep in moisture.
