Problem with fresh fruit is that they have to be hand picked,
which means big labor costs, oh, yeah, and also they have to
be transported, seeds and all; wine, in addition to intrinsically
tasting better than blackberries, is 1. self-preserving to some
extent and 2. concentrated to some extent. I'd thought that you
intended to make something that required whole berries, like a
pie or cobbler or shortcake. And then, when I had to juice the
things, I thought, how nice, a wine substitute for the benefit
of the Hafflys.

 And there was already some dryish white wine in the

But. You do realize that zinfandel will generally produce
greater goodness than dryish white wine plus fresh berries.
Okay, in this dish a few berries for garnish would have been
a good idea (and in which case I'd have had to buy the whole
damcarton of berries anyhow), but you were using a pint or
more of beauties to make a facsimile of cheap red wine! We
could have had tons of berries to nosh on. As it was, I took
the pomace and made successively weaker berry-ades, the last
couple, when the goodness had escaped and all was left was
seeds, tasting sort of like iced tea.

Yep. I looked at Janis's strainer collection, and the only one
that might have helped in this situation had a big hole in it.

The one next is going to fall out in about 6 months, I think: I
figure when I'm in Singapore in January. In 2010 it'll probably
be time to go to Thailand to have some dental work done.

Indeed. What started my self-bankrupting was the sight of the
bacon bar; then the rest just sort of happened. Slippery slope.

It was a respectable semisweet and had a nice vanilla undertone
that the more pure chocolates didn't.

Picadillo mix
cat: main
servings: 8

2 lb ground turkey or beef
1 lg onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 ts crushed red pepper
32 oz cn tomatoes, undrained
1 md green pepper, chopped
salt
2 Tb chili powder
1/2 ts ground cumin

Lightly brown meat with onion, garlic, and red pepper.
Drain. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer for
15-20 min.

Picadillo
cat: main
servings: 4

2 lb picadillo mix
1/3 c raisins
1/4 c toasted slivered almonds
1/4 c sliced pimiento-stuffed olives
1 ds allspice
2 c cooked rice
cilantro for garnish

Combine first 5 ingredients. Heat through, stirring
occasionally, about 5 min. Serve over rice and
garnish with cilantro if desired.
