Ärende: Eating habits (beef) 761
================================
Hi Michael,

RH> I think lunch is the meal I tend to skip the most and not miss.

ML> Lunch is best, as it's the first meal where it is permissible
ML> and customary to ingest large quantities of beef. But if it,

For you, maybe but not for me. It's rare that I eat a lot of meat at
any meal, last night's lamb chop being an exception. I should have only
had half tho. Steve bought a small (table top size) gas grill earlier
in the week so he grilled the lamb which was seasoned with s&p, garlic
powder and herbs de provance. Sides were a tomato/mozzarella/basil
salad with balsamic vinegar, kasha and (commercial) pickled beets.

 ML> doesn't happen, that's no problem, either. I guess that I have
ML> become accustomed to large swings in blood sugar through the day.

You might want to think about getting it more level during the day;
swings can be really bad.

RH> Having a decent breakfast can hold me until supper.

ML> Having a decent night's sleep can hold me until supper.

I'd rather have a bit of something once I get going, partly to buffer
some of the meds I need in the morning. Some have to be taken with
food.

RH> I was surprised; I ate a fair amount at Cortese's and didn't feel too
RH> stuffed for that hour of the night.

ML> It seemed relatively light for Italian-American bar food. Not so
ML> much oil as usual, perhaps?

I don't know; there was quite a bit of butter in my veal picatta. I saw
it on the plate and then in the take out box when I had it for supper
(unheated) Sunday night. Had to saute all the garlic that was in it.
(G)

RH> Steve and I agreed that the rosemary
RH> added flavor that made the lamb better (in our opinion) than the
 RH> chicken.

ML> Again, I have to say that lamb spiedies are intrinsically superior
ML> to chicken; but having spent $26 on a leg of lamb, I didn't want to
ML> compound the damage by buying two of them ... further, there are

I understand; lamb isn't cheap but it is good. (G)

ML> those benighted people on this planet (Gail, for example) who prefer
ML> chicken to lamb. I used part of the savings to buy a little snack
ML> of raw filet mignon, which Burt and I shared (he was a gentleman

Treat time!

ML> and took only an ounce or two). Hmm ... what would you have thought
ML> if the chicken spiedies had rosemary, too?

Probably would have liked them better but still not quite as much as the
lamb. THe lamb "fit" the dish better.

ML> On the other hand, my record is having 3 1500+ Calorie meals
ML> in the space of an evening the day I graduated from university:
RH> And how many Tums or Rolaids? One meal would have been enough for me
 RH> but three?

 ML> I sometimes claim - when I haven't been reminded otherwise by
ML> eating pizza or ice cream - that I have a cast-iron constitution.
ML> At that point it was really true. I felt very stuffed and very
ML> logy after the third dinner - the first was at a long-defunct
ML> fancy place called Voyagers, the second courtesy of the director
ML> of the Bureau of Study Counsel, and the third, well, I'm hazy on
ML> the third, but I think it involved classmates I wasn't going to
ML> see again soon and who liked Italian food. Didn't know about Tums

And being young enough to have a bit higher metabolism no doubt. I used
to eat a lot more than I do now at meals but now I get more doggie bags
when eating out.

ML> or Rolaids until it was represented to me that I should get more
ML> calcium. Once in a while, I did use bicarb (causes spectacular
ML> burps), but that was more likely owing to the effects of
 ML> overindulgence in other things.

Could be but those have been around for years. It's only in the last
10-15 years that they've been touted for increasing a calcium intake.

RH> I try to drink fair amount of liquid in a day; most of it being plain
RH> water. But, I'm starting every day with a cup of tea, no matter what
RH> else I have for breakfast. You saw that was the first thing I had
RH> after the migraine; it helped clear the remnants out.

ML> On your typical day I'll throw down a couple glasses of water,
ML> my liquid intake perhaps augmented by a beer or two or some wine,
ML> but if I don't get any of these things, my system doesn't seem
ML> to suffer. I've gone days, eating regular meals, without a
ML> beverage of any kind, especially if the meals had a bit of
ML> liquid in them (stews, e.g., or spaghetti).

I think it's a hanger-oner from when we lived in AZ and pushing a
higher liquid intake was the norm. We were always told to drink before
you got thirsty to avoid problems associated with a low fluid intake.

I think I snagged this the first time around as "interesting, maybe I'll
give it a try if I ever find lamb" recipe.
