Errrrmmmm - the grinder was pretty large in '59/'60. Of course our definitions
may differ. We called any large square paved area where "drill" was performed
and formations were held "grinder". There were several grinders spotted around
the camp. I do remember the traffic whizzing past on the freeway just a few
yards away - and one memorable day when a big crash happened about even with
the Neversail. One of the cars wound up stuck into the chain-link fence near
amidships. Knot tying class dismissed for a break! Smoking lamp is lit!

I wonder how they are developing Camp Nimitz? I used to stand watches at the
bridge between the island and the main camp ... I suppose in case we were
invaded by older recruits who were further along in their training.   Bv)=

      Title: Dandelion Wine
 Categories: Wine, Beverages, Citrus
      Yield: 1 servings
 
      1 pk Dried yeast
    1/4 c  Warm water
      2 qt Dandelion blossoms
      4 qt Water
      1 c  Orange juice
      3 tb Fresh lemon juice
      3 tb Fresh lime juice
      8    Whole cloves
    1/2 ts Powdered ginger
      3 tb Coarse chopped orange peel
      1 tb Coarse chopped lemon peel
      6 c  Sugar
 
  Dandelion wine does not require any special equipment to
  make. Just dandelions, some sugar and yeast, oranges and
  lemons, and pots to boil water in. This recipe uses cloves,
  which I think give it a nice touch. If you have dandelions
  around, give it a try!
  
  Dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Set aside.
  
  Wash the dandelion blossoms well. Put them in the water
  with the orange, lemon and lime juices. Add the cloves,
  ginger, orange and lemon peel, and sugar. Bring to a boil
  and continue to boil for an hour. Strain through filter paper
  (coffee filters work great). Cool. While still warm (but not
  hot), stir in the yeast.
  
  Let stand overnight and pour into bottles. Allow uncorked
  bottles to set in a darkened place for three weeks. Then
  cork and store bottles in a cool place. Makes about 4 quarts.
  
  Note: Choose dandelions from an open field far from any
  insecticide spraying. Pick early in the season when the
  leaves of the plant are still tender. Flowers that have
  just opened are best.
