========================
Hey Ruth!
->
-> -> HN> We now get paid once a month as well, Anne on the
-> -> HN> last day of the month and me on the first. We
->
-> -> But you have 2 incomes vs the one here.
->
-> hn> E-8 over twenty with housing and rats allowance
-> hn> is more than our two combined. we still have to
-> hn> budget carefully to meet all the bills and come
-> hn> out on the plus side of the ledger. (grin)
->
-> That's the key to it--good budgeting.
->
Which we're having to do quite a bit of
right now as the school district paid Anne
too much money in the summer and took
it all back in the most current check (last
day of August) (yipes!!). Their story is that
they made an accounting error and had to
correct it by the "end of the contract year"
which is August (New school year, new
contratct). We didn't have any objections
to paying the money back, but sure would
have preferred not to have it all come out
of a single check!

-> ->  HN> There's also a neat train museum in Sacramento
-> -> HN> consider that as well for future travels.
->
-> -> I can see the wheels spinning now.................
->
->  hn> Whirrrrrrrrrr! (grin)
->
-> Mostly steam oriented or don't you know?
->
More than likely Steam, as it's
supposed to be covering the early era
of Califunny's history.
->
-> -> No, they teach at the under grad level.
->
-> hn> TA usually, not teach. Happily Amanda
->  hn> has TA'd (Teaching Assistant) several
-> hn> classes, but now with her full funding she's
->
-> I understand that some universities use grad students as teachers for
-> the huge classes ofundergrads (usually freshmen) taking required
-> courses. Sounds like Amanda did well to avoid that.
->
She'd be certain to avoid that as she's not at
the main campus which is about 2 hours away.
She's at the Marine labs and while it's top notch,
it's fairly remote for any number of students. There
are several summer sessions, and the labs are much
busier during the summer months than the winter.
At least as far as visiting students and researchers
go.

-> hn> free to spend all her time doing her research
-> hn> and working on papers for publication.
->
-> Does she take time to cook decent meals or wait until you come to feast?
->
She also has a job at the labs so she lives in the
Grad student dorm (has her own room) which has a
very nice, very large, well equipped kitchen. She's
starting to take an interest in cooking and she's
pretty good at making whole wheat bread by hand.

-> -> -> ponds either time so no overwhelming hog stench. Steve bought 2
->  hn> packs
-> -> -> of Canadian bacon the other night.
-> ->  HN> ->
-> -> HN> Have you eaten any of it yet?
->
-> -> Not yet, probably tomorrow. We do the more involved cooking for
-> -> breakfast on week ends. Part will be used for our own version of "egg
-> -> muffins"--whole wheat English muffin, cheese (real stuff, not plastic)
-> -> and usually turkey bacon with egg; Canadian bacon if we have it
->
-> hn> We make those on occasion. Or we
-> hn> used to before we pretty much gave up
->  hn> on breads.
->
-> We did similar years ago with real bacon and home made English muffings
-> back when the girls were small. Then life got busy, the girls grew up
-> and Steve went on his anti bacon kick. Now that the girls are gone,
-> Thomas's makes a 100% muffin, and there's turkey bacon, we're doing it
-> usually Sunday mornings.
->
If we're going to make a "fancier" breakfast, we
do it on Sunday Mornings too.

-> -> HN> to cook. And eating out is quicker and easier
-> ->  HN> and often even cheaper!
->
-> -> He still ought to learn a few basics to impress the ladies. (G)
->
-> hn> He seems to be pretty good at that
-> hn> already, while we were there a group
-> hn> of 5 young undergrads came out to
-> hn> the labs from campus to visit for the
-> hn> weekend. Maybe the helpless impression
-> hn> works too! (grin) He's quite a nice fellow
-> hn> and enjoyable to talk to. Before he could
-> hn> come to the US for his post graduate work
-> hn> he had to spend a year as a worker at a
-> hn> shrimp farm! His Phd will be in aquaculture
-> hn> and he's doing his doctoral research in
-> hn> hormonal triggers to breeding in certain
->  hn> crabs (I think).
->
-> Sounds fishy. (G)
->
Most things in a marine laboratory do ! (grin)
Since Amanda's doing her research this season
with critters from San Francisco Bay instead
of the local ecosystem, she's been assigned
space in a "Quarantined" segment of the labs.
which is actually much nicer than her regular
space (which she still has). On this trip we
got to see that the lobster research is winding
down and there were only about 1 or 2 dozen
of the pretty blue lobbies there...they look up
and beg for food when you go by their little
cubes!
chat with you soon!
