Ärende: icky stuff to drink 865
===============================
DD> Not necessarily. Most of the "ickies" will hold in place on the coils.
DD> Only some (not much) will go into the catch basin.

If what you're saying were literally true, there would be
noticeable buildup on the coils. What I recall from my dehumidifying
days was that the apparatus would get really cold (with stuff
getting trapped first in cold water and then ice) and then really
hot (with the ice melting along with its yukka into the bin).

ML> actually have tasted basement dehumidifier water just to see
ML> what was what. It tasted like old books.
DD> That's more a function of how clean the coils and the catch basin is
DD> than anything else. When books are first stored in a basement they
DD> smell like any other books - a faint odour of printers ink if anything.
DD> The mold and mildew develop over a period of time and are damned near
DD> impossible to get rid of.

Which speaks to my observation about basement dehumidifier water.

ML> Not talking "sick." Talking bad tasting and cloggative of
 ML> steam irons.
DD> Never had my steam iron clogged from using dehumidifier water. Nor
DD> ruined a storage battery by topping up the cells using distilled water
 DD> from the dehumidifier.

I can't explain the former, but there's no reason why a storage
cell would be ruined, as the impurities would be largely nonreactive;
the buildup would eventually cause trouble just because of physical
obstruction, but that might not happen during the design life of the
battery.

gj->> "Woop Woop" is an example of a wine name not used here.
BF> It' also an example of a wine not drunk here.
AP> It could be worse... TWO BUCK CHUCK
DD> Izzat the same Two Buck Chuck which won double gold medals in blind
 DD> tastings?

Yep, but the news articles, which pandered to people who
imagine that nobody can have a more discriminating palate
than their own tin ones, were quite misleading.

Reason 1. Medals at the county and state fair levels tend to be
awarded based on a point system that rewards absence of obvious
flaws with Gold status. Doesn't necessarily have anything to do
with whether the stuff is any good, just that it's not bad, with
distinctiveness being a subset of badness.

Reason 2. Such competitions have many different categories; getting
a gold is often a matter of entering the right competition: for
Trader Joe, the entry would likely have been something like
"nonvarietal table wine, commercial, under $5 a bottle."

Reason 3. The wines sent to the competitions are not necessarily
typical of those sent to the retailers.

Reason 4. I, my friends, and anyone else with an educated palate
were not judges at these competitions.

GJ> intended of US consumption often has different labels and wine names
GJ> from that which goes to the rest of the world. "Woop Woop" is an
GJ> example of a wine name not used here.
DD> Nor the name of a wine I would take even a minor flutter on.

Names can be misleading. I'm looking for a wine called Layer Cake
Shiraz (also marketed as Pure Love Barossa Jack), about which the
press has been frighteningly positive.

JW> It's better than it sounds. But still, it's an embarrassment to be
JW> seen carrying it from the shelf to the cashier!
DD> How do you think I felt a few years ago in Boston carrying two jugs of
DD> Fat Bastard wine to the check out????

Come now, your parents were married, weren't they?
