Friends set 1:
NB>> OK. A friend was having a private scotch tasting for me, there were a
ML> The right kind of friend to have!
 NB> For sure! :)

To whet your appetite for my dinner report, which I'll get
round to fairly soon I hope, here's the list of what my
right kind of friends offered the other night:

G. H. Mumm et Cie Societe Vinicole de Champagne, Cuvee Rene Lalou, 1985
Ken Wright Cellars Chardonnay, Oregon, 1997
Heitz Chardonnay Lot Z-82, 1968
Chateau Desmirail, Margaux, 1929
Chateau Desmirail, Margaux, 2003
Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon, Cask H-11, 1967
Chateau d'Yquem, 1966

I provided the '03, which was the meanest of the lot; it had set
me back about $50.

NB> Generally in my book opportunity is a friend with the stock.. or
NB> possibly, if I ever get to one, a scotch tasting... there was a store
NB> near us that was talking about hosting such, along with the wine
NB> tastings, but either they never got around to it or I missed it...
NB> they're no longer around, either...

A fine line: if you offer too generous tastings, you might suffer
in the pocketbook; but if you promise such and fail to deliver,
that's probably worse.

Friends set 2:
ML> The meat, lamb and beef mixed, had been marinated in bottled
ML> Italian dressing, a variation that I think we have discussed here
ML> on the echo. It came with bread and rice pilaf. $14. This was
ML> definitely not the memorable meal that I promised to write about.
NB> For that, one would have thought that less than $50 would have been
NB> sufficient... :( Not a restaurant to return to, I'd guess...

This friend goes there with his buddies because the waitresses
all know him (though the kitchen clearly doesn't). The food is
of a standard bar food standard, and the $50 paid for both of us,
including alcohol, tax, tip, and the odd lottery ticket.

=
ML> called the nurse who chewed me out royally. Gave me the choice
ML> of giving up beer or the drug. Heh.
NB> Let me guess... (G) Why pay for drugs when beer is better...?? Did I
 NB> guess right...??? (VBG)

It was not a tough decision, nor a tough guess.

Friends set 3:
ML> These invariably come in little paper cupcake cups, and when
ML> you're finished with the pastries, you get to finish off the little
ML> crispy filaments in the cups. Makes me want to go out for dim sum
 ML> right now.
NB> Yeah... talking about it makes me hungrey for them, too... :)

I had dim sum plans with a bunch of friends but had to
cancel them in favor of other plans with other friends
who took precedence by virtue of holding their breaths
and turning blue until I agreed to see them instead ...
still need a dim sum fix.

NB>> There's another totally different one, where the mashed taro is baked
NB>> inside a pastry shell and then cut into pieces (think sushi rolls).
NB>> They're ok, but I like the others better. :)
ML> Not my style at all, 'cause in this setting the taro might
ML> as well be mashed potatoes.
NB> Yup. That's one reason I'm not too enthused either... It is, though,
NB> a little sweeter than mashed potatoes, and of a slightly different
NB> consistency... I tried them once, and I've passed since. :)

The Asians sweeten up all sorts of weird things, and I'd bet they'd
do that to regular mashed potatoes given the slightest opportunity.
Of course, they're not the only ones to mess with them:
