-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> board flights from Charlotte to both Fayettevilles from
ML> gates within fifty feet of each other, the flights
ML> departing within fifteen minutes of each other. Another
GJ> That would serve to keep the boarding pass checkers on their toes.

ML> Unfortunately, the boarding pass checkers have been taught
 ML> to rely on scanning machines, which routinely don't work;
ML> so when the machines malfunction, the checkers tend to just
ML> wave the pax onto the planes without actually checking
ML> anything, with predictably disastrous results at times.

Hopefully, US Air would give the misdirected passengers free flights
back to the Forgetteville they wanted. On my last NZ trip, when
leaving Auckland, the pilot announced, "Flight 221 from Auckland to
Melbourne", which caused a collective gasp from the passengers, all of
whom wanted to go to Adelaide. The pilot didn't apologise, but just
continued, "The weather in Adelaide is fine, with an expected...."

ML> She is not the savviest of travelers and called US Air to
ML> buy a ticket to Fayetteville AR, and the agent actually
ML> sold her one to the namesake city. She didn't figure this
ML> out until she got to the airport! Luckily, the error was
 ML> cheerfully remedied.

So it should have been, as it was US Air's fault.

ML> For me, MasterCard for cash, Visa for credit.
GJ> That would have an advantage so that you have a better chance of
GJ> finding a bank which takes one or the other. In the Philippines banks
GJ> taking Visa can be difficult to find. MasterCard is more common

ML> My Visa card just got cancelled. Turns out some vendor was
ML> skimming stuff on the side from the cards that were used, and
ML> there was a wholesale recall ... this caused me great
ML> embarrassment when I went to buy my bottle of wine for tonight.
ML> Luckily I had the alternative card. I have called the bank,
ML> which at least has a toll-free number, and got the card
ML> uncancelled for the time being until the new one arrives.

That is disturbing, as I don't want to be caught up in that! What was
the group of Visa cards cancelled? I have both Credit and Debit cards.
I gave up using travellers' cheques many years ago when there was a
rash of counterfeit ones in the Philippines, and the only place which
would cash them was the American Express office in Manila.

AP> and is not Halal there. Jello, believe it or not is considered meat
AP> and since it may come from pork is forbidden.
GJ> I have also heard that, as gelatin can come from any animal, including
GJ> pigs or other haram beasts.

ML> Interestingly, the Jews make the distinction between Kosher
ML> and trayf gelatin ... but if the stuff is made from Kosher meat,
ML> not only is it Kosher, it's considered pareve!

What about yoghurt? I have a vegetarian friend who likes yoghurt, but
as it often contains gelatin she rejected it until I told her to get
yoghurt labelled Halal, as that can only be shown as such if it can be
guaranteed completely free of any Haram-derived ingredients, like
gelatin. No commercial gelatin here is Halal, so if a yoghurt is
labelled Halal, she knows it will not contain any gelatin.

AP> Camel is absolutely Halal if it is killed by proper ceremony. We used
AP> the website below as our reference and double verified with the
GJ> Interesting, as my Afghan butcher told me that both camel and donkey
GJ> are haram, even if killed with the appropriate method and prayers.

ML> Perhaps (as with Judaism) there are flavors of practice and
 ML> degrees of strictness.

As in Hinduism and Christianity, interpretations can vary.

AP> Louisville center for Islamic Studies. Donkey is forbidden because of
AP> the belief that you become as the spirit of the animal if you consume
AP> it. Donkeys are considered stubborn and obstinant animals so their
AP> beliefs are if you eat them then you become as you eat. One of the
AP> reasons they don't eat pork is because they consider the pig to be lazy
AP> and over indulgent in sex.
GJ> Interesting. I thought it was because of the diseases which pigs
 GJ> could transmit to humans.

My reading on that subject indicated that the really useful beasts of
burden, like donkeys and camels, were given immunity from being eaten.
The ruling on horses is more ambivalent.

ML> If you think that dietary rules are based on scientific evidence,
 ML> then think again.

My father, who was a meat inspector for some years, told me that the
Jews were the first people to have proper rules on meat quality, and to
inspect all meat prepared for human consumption. Pigs were outed as
they could contain parasites which could be passed to people.

GJ> Horses can be Halal. Kangaroos are not. :)
 ML> I wonder why not?

They are wild animals.

AP> explaining everything to me... thankfully they don't have a problem
AP> with cucumbers like the Taliban do.
GJ> "Cucumbers", "Taliban" - Huh? (I think I missed something there.)

 ML> From http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iraq/
 ML> 2538545/Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq-alienated-by-cucumber-laws-and-brutality.html

ML> They include a ban on women buying suggestively-shaped vegetables,
ML> according to one tribal leader in the western province of Anbar.
ML> This is apparently the original source, and it hinges on the words,
ML> perhaps true, perhaps misled, perhaps lie, of "one tribal leader."

Possibly. Perhaps apple cucumbers would be allowable. Recently some
of the Australian soldiers in Afghanistan were criticised for confining
several Al Qaeda prisoners in a dog pound. ("Cruel and unusual.") It
was said in defence that the compound was new, and hadn't yet been used
for dogs, and there wasn't any other place available.
