Ärende: 2 Buck Chuck

 ML> Yep, but the news articles, which pandered to people who
 ML> imagine that nobody can have a more discriminating palate
 ML> than their own tin ones, were quite misleading.

 ML> Reason 1. Medals at the county and state fair levels tend to be
 ML> awarded based on a point system that rewards absence of obvious
 ML> flaws with Gold status. Doesn't necessarily have anything to do
 ML> with whether the stuff is any good, just that it's not bad, with
 ML> distinctiveness being a subset of badness.

This was hardly a "county fair" level competition - being the 28th annual
International Eastern Wine Competition, a fairly important event. Their 2002
Shiraz beat out 2300 other wines in the competition.

 ML> Reason 2. Such competitions have many different categories; getting
 ML> a gold is often a matter of entering the right competition: for
 ML> Trader Joe, the entry would likely have been something like
 ML> "nonvarietal table wine, commercial, under $5 a bottle."

Shaw's 2005 Chardonnay was judged best Chardonnay from California (which sort
of fits your quibble - except that some of the best wine makers in the world
(those not in Oz or Frogland) are from Californica - at the Commercial Wine
Competition of the 2007 Califonia Exposition and State Fair. Again, hardly an
obscure, country competition. The Chardonnay got 98 points, and a double gold -
Best of California and Best of Class.

 ML> Reason 3. The wines sent to the competitions are not necessarily
 ML> typical of those sent to the retailers.

Well, DUH!

 ML> Reason 4. I, my friends, and anyone else with an educated palate
 ML> were not judges at these competitions.

Oh, now I see. All my cogent replies to your quibbles are a result of my leg
being pulled. I view the medals of 2 Buck chuck as similar in ability to shock
with the first time the California Wines beat out the Froggies at the Paris
Wine competition.

      Yield: 6 servings

  1 1/2 lb Ripe tomatoes; seeded,
           - chopped
      1 md Purple onion; chopped
      1 lg Clove garlic; chopped
      3    Scallions or green onions;
           - chopped
      2 lg Fresh jalapeño peppers;
           - seeded, chopped
    1/4 c  Fresh cilantro leaves;
           - chopped
      1 To 3 small cans of green
           - chilies; depending upon
           - taste
      1 tb Olive oil
      2 tb Fresh lime juice
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Ground cumin
      1 ts Red wine vinegar
      2 tb Tomato juice

  Combine onion, garlic, jalapeño and cilantro in blender or
  food processor. Pulse until finely chopped, but not puréed.

  Add tomatoes, canned chiles, oil, lime juice, salt, cumin,
  vinegar and tomato juice. Pulse until just chopped -- not
  too smooth.

  Correct seasonings, if necessary. Cover and refrigerate for
  about an hour before serving. Makes about 4 cups.

  Note: This salsa is best if brought back to near-room temp
  when it is served.
