From the satellite photos I have seen on TV, Ike looks like a monster,
and likely to affect a large area, and is entering the Bay of Mexico.
It did a job on Cuba, leaving many parts without power for an expected
month or more.

The bottles or bags kept in the freezer should have a strong brine in
them, as that freezes at well below 0 degrees C, and will therefore
help keep frozen food frozen.  Plain water is OK in the refrigerator.

 RH> Providing the kids were GJ> told not to keep opening the fridge to get
 RH> cool drinks everything GJ> would be GJ> kept cold for most of a day.

 RH> Have to watch it with the kids but I'm sure they learned quickly. 
 RH> When I was a kid, the well water was cold right from the tap so we

Having a well with good water and a hand pump is a great advantage when
all external services stop.
 
 GJ> For emergency lighting at home, and in supermarkets, small
 GJ> fluorescent, battery operated lights were kept plugged in and charged.

 RH> I've seen those.  We've a good supply of flashlights and batteries on
 RH> hand.

And don't forget the transistor radio, to keep up with news bulletins.

 GJ> stereos for entertainment then of course, so people had to drag out
 GJ> their old accoustic guitars and sing.  That was very pleasant.

And, being good Catholics, they always had plenty of candles.  :)
Our family stove normally used bottled gas, but also included one
electric element.  That was more expensive to cook on, but it was very
useful for backup when the gas bottle ran out part way through cooking.

 RH> We missed the big hit this time around.  There was actually a lot less
 RH> wind and rain than predicted, even on Thursday's forecasts, so we had
 RH> a nice week end.

      Title: TEENAGER'S SURVIVAL EGG & BACON TARTS
 Categories: Breakfasts, Snacks, Easy
      Yield: 12 Servings
 
     12 sl Bread
     12 md Eggs
      3 sl Bacon rashers
 
  Ever want a good bacon & egg brekkie but don't have the time or
  enthusiasm to get crankin'? Well, this is the recipe for you! Both
  soft white or brown bread can be used.
  
  Preheat the oven to 180^C.
  
  Cut the crusts off the bread. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin & put one
  sice of bread in each cup. Break an egg onto the bread in each cup &
  then add the bacon. Place in the oven for about 20 minutes.
  
  Take the tarts out of the muffin tin & put on a tray in the oven for
  a few minutes to brown the bottoms. Serve straight away.
