Not hard to do, but there are a lot of steps to get the job totally
done.

Open up MM. Type M to get to the maintenance menu. This menu has a lot
of configuration options on it.

While you are in the maintenance menu be careful of the key strokes. I
have often changed something unintentionally by hitting a wrong key. E.g.
if you hit O by mistake, you might find yourself suddenly exporting into
the dreaded two-column format.

Hit F for filepath. It may come up with a drop down menu of the various
file paths that you have created (I assume only one at this point). Hit
ESC key to come out of that drop down menu. Then in the box next to the
letter F, type in the file path of the new directory. For example, if
your mealmaster program is in K:\mm8 then you might type K:\mm8\diabetic
to be a directory to hold all of your diabetic recipes. Next thing that
happens is a message
"New Path: K:\mm8\diabetic"
"Directory does not exist -- create it Y/N"
Type Y for yes.

Next a new screen letting you know that the files it needs, INDEX.MME,
INGRED.MME, and DIRECT.MME do not exist. It asks if you want to create
them -- say Y for yes.

You will hear a slight beep, and are back to the maintenance menu with
the F box filled in with K:\mm8\diabetic. Hit ESC and you will be back
at the main menu. MealMaster will be using your diabetic file. You can
use utilities to import recipes, etc.

My advice would be to think about major categories you want to divide
your database into. Set up a separate directory for each one using that
method. Plan your names so that they start with a different letter of
the alphabet (Makes switching to them later on easier).

I have file directors for Ethnic, Diet, Meat, Vegetarian, Library (sort
of a catch all), Crockpot, and some others. Make the directories that
make sense for you.

Once you have created the directory, then you have the job of moving
recipes from the old directory into the new one. First advice is BACKUP
before you start:-}}

Use the search feature to select bunches of recipes. E.g. Search on
category diabetic. Automark search is recommended. Be aware that MM
will only mark the first 1000 hits. Go to utilities, export the marked
recipes. Then go to maintenance and switch to the diabetic directory
(or whatever you are wanting to move the recipes into). Back to main,
utilities and import the file. It is possible that some recipes will
not import correctly for strange reasons. That is why I have it save an
import.err file and take a look at it.

Once you have imported the file into your new directory, use maintenance
menu again to go back to the original directory. Utilities menu again
and this time hit F for "Flag marked recipes for deletion". When you go
back to the search menu, they should no longer be visible to future
sorts, assuming that the normal "Hide flagged deletions from search" is
toggled to YES. The recipes have not really been deleted. They are
still in your original database, but you can get totally rid of them in
another operation.

That operation is called "Rebuild" and is also on the maintenance menu.
This is an operation that should be done every now and then anyhow.
Each time you revise a recipe, the old version does not go away but is
marked for deletion and the new version is inserted. REBUILD reclaims
the disk space for all deletions of any sort.

Hope that all of that makes sense.

BTW, if you go to Scott's web site at
http://home.comcast.net/~episoft/mmdown.htm
there is a link to download the PDF file manual (6.3MByte). I'll grant
that it is a bit sparse on all you need to do in order to split up your
database, but it is still a useful manual if you don't have it. When he
first made MM8 freeware, the manual was not available -- but he has now
put it up in that format.
