Some years ago, there were several programs that were popular in the
echos for recipes.  MealMaster was one.  Another was called Qbook.  The
Qbook folks hated MM because of its rigid format requirements.  Qbook
had hardly any format, but simply imported a text file between a header
and a footer -- with something to give categories for sorting.  The MM
folks liked the features that the program offered, some of which relied
on the separtation of ingredients, categories and directions.  In the
end, both survived -- but MM remains the more popular.

IMO, the reason for the enforced format was to allow for ingredient
lists to be stored in a form that could be manipulated internally --
e.g. for resizing, for searching, conversion to/from metric, etc.

      Title: Curried Apple-Raisin Salad
 Categories: Salads, Fruit, Sthrn/livng
      Yield: 6 servings
 
      2    Apples; cored and cubed
      1 c  Celery; chopped
    1/2 c  Raisins
    1/2 c  Walnuts; coarsely chopped
    1/4 c  Mayonnaise
    1/4 c  Sour cream
      1 tb Lemon juice
      1 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Curry powder; to 1/2 ts.
           Lettuce leaves
           Apple wedges; opt.
 
  Combine apple, celery, raisins, and walnuts; toss lightly to mix.
  combine mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, salt, and curry powder,
  mixing well.
  
  Pour the sauce mixture over apple mixture; stir gently, coating apples
  thoroughly.  Serve in a lettuce-lined bowl; garnish with apple
  wedges, if desired.
