Actually further reading from several sources indicate that the actual allergy
vector is unknown. It may have been chilies. Or it may have been an ingredient
in the "chilli sauce" used as one of the other ingredients, or it may have been
another ingredient entirely. No one knows. And with the subject dead there is
no practical way to test for allergic reaction.

What really pisses me off it the sensationalism that the reporter and newspaper
attached to the death ... fixing on heat from chilies and implying that it was
the proximate cause of the poor sod's shuffling off this mortal coil. It's poor
journalism and serves no purpose other than to reinforce the mental laziness of
the reporters and editors who "broke" the story.

As a dormant journalist (no one ever quits the trade - really) it really ticks
me off that such is allowed to proceed. I was held to higher standards ...
hell, I held myself to higher standards than that. And I was not a "world
class" reporter - although I considered my opinion pieces to be deathless
rose.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Strawberry Cup
 Categories: Five, Beverages, Fruit
      Yield: 20 servings
 
  2 3/4 lb Strawberries; trimmed,
           - hulled
      1 c  Distilled white vinegar
      2 c  Sugar
      3 qt Club soda
           Ice cubes
 
  Special equipment: a 2-qt pitcher
  
  The recipe for this strawberry cup includes white vinegar
  and sugar, which added just a hint of naughtiness—once you
  sweeten the vinegar it tempers the sourness, and the
  combination is vaguely suggestive of wine.
  
  Pulse strawberries in a food processor until coarsely chopped,
  then transfer to a large bowl and stir in vinegar. Chill,
  covered, 12 hours.
  
  Pour into a fine-mesh sieve set over a large bowl and let
  drain, gently stirring frequently and pressing without
  forcing any pulp through sieve, until juice in bowl measures
  3 1/2 to 4 cups, 25 to 30 minutes. Discard pulp.
  
  Transfer juice to a 3-quart heavy nonreactive saucepan and
  stir in 2 cups sugar, then cook over moderate heat,
  stirring, until sugar is dissolved, 5 to 6 minutes. If
  desired, add more sugar to taste. Cool syrup 30 minutes
  (you will have about 4 cups).
  
  For each pitcherful, stir 1 cup syrup together with 3 cups
  water or soda in pitcher and add ice to fill.
  
  Cooks’ note: Syrup keeps, covered and chilled, 1 week.
