My computer died, or at least is giving last gasps,
and the new one died almost immediately after I
loaded all my sensitive information on it AND typed
five more pearly pearls of FIDO wisdom. And I'm
stuck here with next to nada to eat, so here's a
Tastes report.

Hormel HOT chili with beans - I was hungry on
Friday after a hard morning configuring the box,
so I went to the larder to see what was what. Other
than some unpromising frozen stuff, some sour cream
and onion potato chips, some cocoa mix, a lemon
cake, and an impossible quantity of Simply Natural
lemonade, there was only the larder, out of which
I took this can and popped the top. The wonderful 
aroma of baked beans jumped out at me. I looked at
the can. Damn, said I; I certainly have not taught
this kid well. Be that as it may, I heated it up and
boiled some pasta to go with (there's a half box
of vermicelli from several months ago), to make a
ready-made 3-way.

The chili is not offensive-tasting but very bland,
which a tablespoon of chili powder, a shake of my
secret blend (1/3 each extra-hot red pepper powder,
garlic powder, and salt substitute), a glugg of
vinegar-pepper sauce, and a good imagination
fixed up adequately. The taste then became sort
of like the way school cafeteria chili used to smell
like (I never could afford to buy any, as it was 35c).
The texture was strange: a pale brown gravy that
managed to be watery and gluey at the same time,
beans that were gummy and pasty, and meatoid substance
whose aspect was partway between beans and the burger I
describe below. Ah, it was my first meal in 36 hours.

The next day:
Nature's Promise char-grilled soy burger - Ingredients:
filtered water, soy protein concentrate, reduced fat
cheddar cheese (pasteurized part-skim milk, cheese
culture, salt, enzymes, annatto, vitamin A palmitate),
wheat gluten, cellulose gum, natural flavors, salt,
dried onion, sesame oil, spices. This is a product of
the Royal Ahold conglomerate. It is not a yum. The
cooking aroma is of artificial smoke. The taste is
primarily of salt and smoke, a bit of onion and soy.
Then the next bite: spoiled milk hits. The next: onion
and smoke. It's as though the vat or trough hadn't been
mixed enough. The smoke is very pronounced: it persists
both in the mouth and in the burps for at least half an
hour. The appearance: like a fast-food burger, with
fake grill marks. The texture: gummy with chunks.
Do not buy. 

Off to the airport in a couple hours, YAY!

But I'll be carrying two nonfunctional laptops, each
weighing 50% more than my ideal travel box. Humbug.
