I was pretty enthusiastic about going to Malacca via bus
and in fact just for this purpose got extra visa pages
sewn into my passport as they had nearly run out.

Yes and no. Yes because of the pollution and general
inhumanity but no because it's what Asia used to be
all about - plus we have friends who live there.

It was for this last that I was most interested. But our
hotel would have been one block from the Presidential
palace, and who knew what would happen. There were bunches
of protests around there, apparently, from the Soehartists
lobbying for a late pardon or droppage of charges for the
old man.

These turned out to be enjoyable but very tame treasures:
the Orchid Garden, a stall called Dessert Mouse (where I
had a durian cendol made with fresh ripe durian - my
compatriots had one or two tastes and complained of durian
burps for the rest of the afternoon), and a trattoria where
I had a pretty good grigliata mista with a decent Montepulciano
d'Abruzzo.

We went to Pulau Ubin, which, though part of Singapore,
required an explosives search on reentry onto the main
island. I set the machine off, but the guard just waved
me by; thereupon some white tourists also set the machine
off, and they were hauled off for a microsearch.

NYONYA FRIED RICE
cat: rice, main, Malaysian, Hawaiian
Yield: 8 servings

5 Tb salad oil
3 eggs, beaten
1 sm onion, thinly sliced
1/2 c chopped dried shrimp
4 c cooked rice
1 c frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
4 oz sliced mushrooms, drained
salt to taste
hot pepper-soy sauce to taste
chili powder to taste
shredded lettuce

In a large skillet, heat 2 Tb of the oil. Add eggs and fry
in an even layer until firm. Remove and cut into strips. Add
onion to skillet and cook until golden brown; remove and set
aside. Heat remaining 3 Tb oil and fry shrimp for one minute.
Add rice, vegetables, mushrooms, half of the egg strips, the
onion, and seasonings; stir fry for 3 min. Add a little water
if rice is too dry. Serve on a bed of shredded lettuce and top
with remaining egg strips.
