===================
BS> Aimed squarely at the Europeans. They fly into Whitehorse, tour BC
BS> and/or the Yukon/NWT. Hop on the plane and fly to Anchorage, tour
BS> Alaska and then on home.

Do the loads shake out appropriately - i.e., is there a constant
stream that allows them to fly a regular schedule year-round? The
way I see it, there might be the problem of a glut of Europeans
and a shortage of seats, say, around the end of the summer.

When we flew over I think we were the only
 BS> non-Europeans on the plane

Funny, you don't look non-European!

BS> part of the reason there's a shortage of property down on the Kenai.
BS> Apparently the Europeans are flying over, after buying everything they
BS> can down there, and spending their summers.

With a strong Euro, they can afford to do that. There was a time
not so long ago that we could go to Europe (it's still true to
some degree of Asia) with dollars stuffed in our pockets and buy
vast chunks of prime real estate.

BS> We pay for everything almost exclusively with our AS CC, meaning we
BS> have miles and miles and miles. While we're very good about it we're
BS> not at strange as some folks. For example, we know a couple who take
BS> in foster children. All are handicapped and some need treatment in
BS> Seattle. So they burn miles like you wouldn't believe. He went out,
BS> a few years ago, and bought a brand new GMC Suburban using his AS CC.
BS> Then he arranged for financing and used it to pay off the CC. Picked
BS> up 35-40,000 miles that way.

Hey, that's a first-class ticket anywhere Alaska flies, nothing
to sneer at.

BS> Before we went to Europe Connie discovered that if we used
BS> the VISA they would charge a fee, per transaction, for currency
BS> exchange. Whereas MasterCard rolled all the transactions together and
BS> charged an exchange fee once. This may not be how it's done currently
BS> and we're going to have to recheck it since they seem to change the
BS> rules with little or no notification

It may be up to the issuing bank. I used to have this issue with
using credit cards abroad and discovered that one in particular,
Alaska Airlines Visa, if the truth be known, was the absolute worst,
where as the Fidelity Visa was much better. But that changed as
Fidelity I believe went out of house and got some craven bank
involved, and things went to hell in a handbasket. So I went back
to using the AS Visa, chalking the exorbitant fees BoA charges up
to "costs of doing mileage business."

CREPES MADE WITH HINANO BEER
cat: dessert, beer
yield: 15

25 cl Hinano beer
250 g sifted flour
3 lg eggs
40 g powdered sugar
25cl milk
40 g butter
4 cl dark rum
1 pn salt

Beer is not just a pleasant and thirst-quenching drink. It's also
a quality ingredient found in many recipes. One of the best known
is indisputably the crepes recipe. Here's how to enjoy this
gastronomic delight

The preparation is simple. It takes just 10 minutes before letting
the batter stand for 1 hour.

Mix the flour, sugar, milk, eggs, 5 cl of Hinano, and the dark rum
in a deep, round dish. Beat until obtaining a well-blended and
smooth batter.

Add the butter that has already been allowed to melt and mix
everything again. Add the rest of the beer, mix, and let stand 1 hr.

Beat the batter once again just before cooking.

Heat your frying pan over a high temperature, melt the butter,
lower the heat slightly, and add a ladleful of batter. Be sure to
tilt the pan to spread the batter evenly. Cook 2 min on one side
until the batter is well colored. Then with a firm and confident
grasp of the pan, launch the crepe toward the ceiling, allowing
it to turn in midair, and then catch it in the pan and cook for
another 2 min. Serve hot with your choice of covering: sugar,
chocolate, jam, cheese, delicatessen meats or ice cream
- everything is good!

"Tama'a Maitai", or "bon appetit"!
