Yes, the acid from the tomatoes does interact with cast iron.  Sometimes
it's enough so that the cook pot or pan needs a reseasoning after tomato
stuff has been cooked in it.

It ain't true chili without tomato. (G) The judges were right to comment
on that.

No problem there; I always put tomato in (I've still not done the chili
verde.) my chili.  It's always some kind of stewed, dice cut, crushed or
whatever (even fresh, skinned & cut up) and tomato paste.  It's one of
the other ingredients that I use that doesn't make it "true" chili for
competition. (G)
