===============================
ML> endear one to the neighbors. Mowing frequently all season
ML> would yield small, low flowers that I think would be quite
 ML> attractive.
NB> They may be invasive, but, if one likes them, and isn't trying for a
NB> "county club" lawn, they are indeed beautiful. And, when the
NB> neighbors agree, one doesn't have to worry over the endearment stuff..

The other thing that people dislike is that the reproductive
apparatus are too obvious. Though these have their own beauty,
if you look at the seed ball and its delicate glider apparatus.

NB> (G) And, yes, when mowed often enough, the small low flowers are
 NB> indeed quite attractive... :)

The objection I have is that the stalks are too tall for my
aesthetic. Also, the laxative and diuretic effect from eating
the plant. I was amused when one of the local fancy restaurants
served dandelion bacon onion salad for something like $10 as an
appetizer. (I ordered it, though - it was good.)

ML> former, I'm told, was priceless. I'd say, steering back closer to
ML> the topic, that 90% of my Jewish friends do not keep Kosher, and
ML> of the ones who say they do, most make exceptions for things like
 ML> lobster and Genoa salami.
NB> I have some that do fairly strictly, others that try to usually, and
NB> others for whom Kosher is an historic term not to be applied today.
NB> My HS here in Rochester had a high Jewish population, and there were
NB> quite a few at RIT, as well. Not sure what the percentages of
 NB> Kosher/non would be, though.

To stereotype a little, I find that scientists and engineers are less
likely to keep Kosher than my friends in business and education. I
guess a more objective view does that to you.

ML> But, yes, I do believe that I've eaten fatty deli meats in the
ML> company of such, and Kosher salami has been among these, though
ML> to be fully accurate, I eat tongue, pastrami, and chopped liver,
ML> all foods that would send shudders down the spines of some of
ML> these people, more often than I do salami.
NB> All excellent foods, of course... :) (And designed to send shudders
NB> down many goy spines as well [g])

It's been pointed out that if you kill an animal, it behooves you
to use as much of it as possible. Not to mention that tongue and
liver taste good.

ML> The origin of the term "chou" meaning "darling" may not have been
ML> from the cabbaginess of dearness or the dearness of cabbage. In fact,
ML> I know it's not. In fact, come to think of it, I know what the origin
ML> is. Anyone care to take a guess? I think you won't find it in
 ML> Wikipedia.
NB> Do tell.. :) Not likely to check wiki, anyway... My dictionary
 NB> didn't show origins, just meanings. (It's Larousse's (c) 1955, which I
NB> got when I was taking HS French...)

I don't think you'll find this in the reference books.

Not only do the French like cabbage [g], the official word for dear
or darling is "cher," pronounced "shairh," with the last consonant
being one of the most difficult sounds in that language. Baby talk
would yield something like "shaiuu" or just "shuu," which is how
"chou" sounds. It's pretty obvious, actually, for anyone who has
heard young children speaking French.

ML> so I figure healing is going on and no reinjury has
ML> occurred. Good thing, as I have a passel of walking to do in
ML> the next few days, and arrogant me, I refused to bring my
 ML> cane with me.
NB> Sounds like healing... and I do hope that your arrogance doesn't cost
NB> you... ;) I suspect, though, that in a similar circumstance, I might
NB> also have not felt the need to drag along a cane... :)

I feel really self-conscious about using implements of this sort,
even temporarily. And my brother recently recounted to me a funny
(to him) episode of Seinfeld, which involves some guy who starts
using a cane for legitimate reasons, but he discovers that the
attention and consideration that he gets from this is addictive,
so he continues to use it just because, making up some fancy story.
But he's outed when he's accosted by muggers and runs away. To
which I (I am sometimes the glass half empty guy, especially with
humor, which is based far too often on cruelty) responded that
if I were about to be mugged, I'd run away, cane or no cane,
pulled muscle or no pulled muscle. There are good reasons for
fight or flight.

Meanwhile, I did in fact reinjure it again, only not so badly:
I was walking down the sidewalk in the dark and fell into a hole,
and I'm surprised all the healing didn't get undone, but only a
little bit. But this seems to indicate that I'm getting better in
general.

Sweet Potato Pudding
Cat: dessert, Filipino
Serves: 4

3 md sweet potatoes
4 c whole milk
1 cn condensed milk
1/4 ts cardamon powder
1 Tb brown sugar
1 c cane sugar
1 Tb unsalted butter
blanched almonds and raisins

Peel sweet potatoes and rinse. Cube.

Boil the whole milk in a heavy skillet on medium
heat. Add sweet potatoes to the boiling milk and
lower heat. Continue to cook until sweet potatoes
are well done, stirring occasionally. Remove from
heat and mash potatoes until smooth.

In a separate skillet, heat 1 Tb unsalted butter.
Add blanched almonds and raisins and fry on very
low heat until they turn light brown. Remove from
skillet to a plate and set aside. In the same hot
skillet, add brown sugar and cardamon powder, keeping
heat low. Next, add mashed sweet potatoes along with
condensed milk and sugar. Turn heat to medium, cook,
stirring constantly until the consistency becomes
desirably thick.

Remove from heat. Immediately transfer the dessert
to a serving bowl and let set to cool. Garnish with
almonds and raisins. Chill in refrigerator. Serve
with a dash of heavy cream on top.
