Kids (and adults) have a tendency to only tell the part of the story
that makes them look better...  Years ago when our son was growing up,
we used to take a bunch of his friends from the neighborhood with us to
church fairly regularly.  Well, one day one of them (while waiting to
leave for church) kicked at our van, unfortunately for him while Richard
was looking out the window.  Richard went out and gave him what-for,
going so far as to hold him up against the outer wall of the house to
get his attention.  By then we were ready to go, and we all piled into
the van...  Most of the way there Jimmy was muttering about how as soon
as we got there, he was going to goin' to call his mama, and tell her
about how he was man-handled, and boy was she gonna be mad at Richard...
until I quietly reminded him that he also had to tell her what he did
first to provoke it.  Shut the kid right up, and he was fine the rest of
the day.  Of course, he knew that his mom would take our side, if she
heard the whole of it... being Jamaican and a single mom, she was glad
for whatever help she got in giving her son helpful discipline, and had
previously given us permission... :)

Apparently she* learned some of her attitudes etc at home...  :(  And
more than ever, parents don't want to accept that their little darlings
could be at fault...  Also, it appears that the kid found you a
convenient scapegoat... too bad for her it won't stick...   Does Mom
know now about the much more serious charges...?
