The US has become more xenophobic than usual and has been quite
inimical to everyone's tourist dollar of late. The current
condition of the USD versus various other currencies reflects that.

My first fond thought was that Kevin was to blame, but most
"foreign nationals" are given this extra scrutiny these days.

Mostly by example, I think. Winnie did most of the actual work.

That is a really, really disquieting image. That said, everything
save beet juice and corn kernels appear to have been quite
thoroughly, er, processed.

Probably not.

Funnily, I find the tuna fruit more flavorsome than the dragon
cousin.

True truth. I have had some of those nearly invisible spines
lodge within various parts of my person. Quite unpleasant.

TORTILLITAS DE CAMARONES (Shrimp Fritters or Pancakes)
categories: Mexican, shellfish, appetizer
Yield: 10 small pancakes

3 Tb olive oil
3 Tb onion; minced
2 Tb minced parsley
1/8 ts paprika
3 Tb flour
7 Tb water
3/4 ts salt
1/2 ts baking powder
1/4 lb shrimp; shelled and finely chopped
oil for frying

Heat the 3 Tb oil in a skillet. Add the onion and parsley
and wilt. Stir in the paprika.

Mix the flour, water, salt, and baking powder. Add the onion
mixture and the shrimp. In a skillet, heat the frying oil,
1/4" deep, until it reaches the smoking point. Drop the batter
by the tablespoon into the oil, flattening the pancakes
into 2-1/2" rounds with the back of a spoon that has first been
dipped in the hot oil. Fry until lightly golden, turning once.
Drain and serve immediately. I'd serve these with lemon wedges,
but lemon juice or balsamic and plive oil whisked together, or
a tomato sauce or a tartare sauce or Sriracha sauce would be good.
