Ärende: do I hear an Echo 303
=============================

CS>> Now, if I could find an all dark meat turkey....
NB>> Can't find a whole turkey all dark meat... but one could just get the

ML> I wish. One can always get a duck, though, with all that lovely
 ML> duck fat.

Oh, I wish, too... and a duck's not quite the same, in some ways better
than a turkey... ;)

NB>> thighs, and cook them... I've done that now for a few years... if I'm
NB>> just cooking it for us (no visitors that might think that they were
NB>> missing out if there were no white meat). One can cook them atop the
NB>> stuffing and it's almost like cooking the stuffing inside the bird.

ML> I've been buying chicken and turkey thighs by preference since
ML> childhood. That's nicer than a whole turkey and so preferable to a
ML> turkey breast (I originally typed "bore") I can't believe it. Jonathan,

Chicken thighs... moi, aussi... perhaps not from childhood, but for most
of my adult life... and the turkey thighs are actually quite a few years
now, too. I figured, why not get the parts we like, and skip the rest.
Especially since we'd have to force ourselves to eat the rest of it. :)
And then, dark meat is cheaper than the white... ;)

ML> poor soul, got a home economics lesson: he bought a turkey boob and
ML> cooked it according to the system I described to Clean Dave yesterday
ML> ... I marched him to the grocery, and showed him a 20-lb whole turkey,
ML> which cost less than his purchase and included it plus a pair of wings,
ML> a pair of drummers, a pair of thighs, and a yummy lower back. His
ML> excuse: it wouldn't fit into the oven (false). Oh, yes, the turkey
ML> breast he bought was frozen, and this thing was fresh. I'm really

Poor soul, indeed... not to be able to visualize the size of the oven
properly, etc... and not realize how easily he could have pacified
brother, at a lower overall cost besides... :) (Interesting system he
had for cooking the breast, too...)

ML> doubting his connection to the real world, as I fed him some pork
ML> cracklings off a butt roast that we had bought together, and he thought
 ML> they were beef.

I thought that his lack of connection to the real world was a given
already...? :)

NB>> It is to laugh (sorta), the stores pushing the extra white meat
NB>> turkeys... there must be a market for it... but not with me or you...

ML> There are those who like the white part - enough that I shudder
ML> every time I take the BWI bus down to the Metro, as it goes through
ML> the USDA station where the Beltsville turkey (extra big breast, and
ML> the dominant type on the market today) was developed. I've always

I have this memory from grade school years, of snacking on some leftover
breast meat from some year's Thanksgiving turkey, and thinking to myself
that it would make a good substitute for bread... dry, not much taste,
but presumably nutritious. Much improved by adding tasty stuffing,
cranberry sauce and good gravy...

ML> been a leg man myself. Often, when I crave poultry, I'll get the
ML> cheapest thing available (whole chicken or turkey), carve off the
ML> breast meat to use in scalloppini or stir-fry, and roast the
 ML> carcass and legs.

Now that's a solution, too... although I'd probably end up not using
the reserved breast meat...

CS>> Hehe and i got off easy. Don did almost all the cooking. Family
CS>> tradition of his, 'Dad does the turkey' (dont laugh!)
 NB>> That's a tradition I could get used to... (G)

ML> Invite me over, I'll cook, me me me.

You'd probably be disappointed with my lack of workable kitchen.
Otherwise, I'd certainly consider it strongly... :)

-=> Nancy Backus said to Dale Shipp <=-

NB>>> always at least a day or two behind by the time I can read and answer
NB>>> again... oh well... at least it keeps, usually... ;)
 DS>> That is why it is called an "echo" and not "instant messages":-}}
NB>> True... and a good reason why I'm here, and not doing IM... (G) The
NB>> other reason being that I'm not usually at my computer at all hours of
NB>> the day or night, like some people I know... ;)

ML> I've never used IM - it'd be a drain on the resources of the computer
ML> and of me. The notion that I'd be at the mercy of anyone who has a
ML> fast Internet connection grates upon me. If I want that kind of
ML> interaction, I'll call 'em on the phone, or, better, hop a plane and
 ML> visit.

Peas in a Pod, for sure! :) Most of my siblings connect via IM...
perhaps they aren't ALWAYS at the computer, but the computer is at hand
and on while they do their daily chores. Mine is upstairs and off until
I go up to use it. Besides, I'm still in DOS, and have no intentions
to move to any form of Windows or other OS just to have the irritation.
When I'm visiting them, I get to see it in action, even had the chance
to be a part of it... definitely not for me.

ML> The relaxed nature of this echo reflects both the relatively
ML> time-insensitive nature of our general lives and the luxury we have
ML> to mull over what we say (should we choose to do so). It's interesting

Which I certainly consider a boon...

ML> that I've begun to have gearshift problems, and it now takes me a
ML> while to ramp up to speed when entering a fast-moving conversation,
ML> and once I've habituated to that way of thinking (which also obtains at
ML> the frequent flyer BBS), I have to ramp down again before reading my
 ML> echomail.

I can relate... :) although, sometimes, I think that my turbo gear is
mostly missing, nowadays... ;) Not just for conversation, but also
for gearing up to get lots done in a short period of time, which I used
to do on a regular basis. Guess my get up and go got up and went... ;)
