NB>> things not already sorted out... When it came time to actually stuff
NB>> the stockings, those bags could be (individually, even) dumped out
NB>> into piles, the fruit added, and then the stuffed stocking could be
NB>> put back into the bag (with the person's name on it)...

RH> Madness to your method. (G)

Yup. ;)

RH> sandwich of top, batting and backing) and others "just" needed a turn
RH> over binding done. I worked on that, grabbing bits and pieces of
RH> cheese, meat, crackers and raw veggies in between quilts for supper.

Linus project
NB>> I'm sure it was a lot of fun... and that there was conversational buzz
NB>> as well, filling the room. This is an on-going project, I gather?

RH> Yes, it's a nation wide one as well. A group meets every 3-4 months
RH> here in the Savannah area; I think there are 2 groups in the area.
RH> Kids in crisis situations get a small quilt or blanket (they can be
RH> knit or crochet as well as quilts, as long as they are home made). A
RH> good cause to get involved with and an outlet for my creativity.

Indeed a worthy cause. :)

RH> Talked to Rachel; Challenger does not do field trips as they detract
RH> from academic time. Parents are supposed to supply enrichment
 RH> experiences.

Still seems a bit short-sighted to me... but I suppose that one would
hope that parents that would chose such a school for their kids would
also be more likely to stay involved in the whole process...??

RH>> back to the pumpkin farm trip: we saw all these little kids getting
RH>> off the bus with pumpkins about as big as they were. Then Rachel got
RH>> off, carrying a little one, a bit bigger than a softball. I think she
RH>> was the only one with a small pumpkin. We bought a bigger one (Jack O
RH>> Lantern size) at the school's Pumkpin Patch Carnival about a week later.

NB>> Sounds like she was the only sensible one... :) And she got two
NB>> pumpkins out of it, one to share, and one for her very own... (G)

RH> Both had faces drawn on them (with marker) for jack o lanterns; then
RH> cooked down for pies, etc afterward.

A totally win situation... :)

NB>> People seem to so easily lose sight of the value of a well-rounded
NB>> education... they think that by "teaching to the test" they will
NB>> produce better educated kids... when the so-called frills (like the
 NB>> arts, music,

RH> Challenger does have some sort of art and music program. Since it's a
RH> private school, they don't have to teach to the test. The students
RH> there work at a grade or two higher than public schools.

I'm glad they at least have art and music as part of their curriculum.
I went to a small parent-run Christian school for much of my
schooling... the 7-12 portion of it set aside one day a week for the
enrichment parts of education, various art and music classes, drama,
choir, even sewing, and others that I don't remember now, and also gym
classes... we had to use the Y facilities and a public playing field, as
the school didn't have their own. And academically we tended to be at
at least a grade or nore higher than the public schools.

NB>> home ec, field trips, etc) are really quite important to making the
NB>> learning stick, and become more than just meaningless facts to forget
NB>> as soon as the test is done...

RH> Sad to say, a lot of it is true. But, the basic education level of
RH> kids graduating high school needs to be increased as well.

Very true... one can't just do enrichment without teaching, or there's
nothing to enrich... ;> But there needs to be real teaching happening
for there to be real learning... and real teaching includes whatever it
takes to help the child assimilate the knowledge... along with the child
needing to be engaged in the process.

acrylic cookbook stands
RH>> But can you imagine doing a messy, multi page recipe with
RH>> the cook book under one of those stands? Sure wouldn't fly in my
 RH>> kitchen. (G)
NB>> Exactly what I was imagining... (G) Maybe it would fly if someone
NB>> with clean hands was around to turn the page at the appropriate time?
NB>> And one never had to check the ingredients list at the beginning again

 RH> Right!

NB>> :) Nope... don't think it would fly here, either...

 RH> Not here.

Definitely we are in agreement here... (G)
