Hahahaha - I remember big console TV sets.  Back in the days of
tubes and steel chassis construction, those big wooden cabinets
had a practical function, though - you needed somewhere to stash
all the electronic components (and you had the bonus of being able
to mount big, nice-sounding speakers in there back in the days 
when speakers needed to be big to be nice-sounding.)  Consoles
didn't really die off until circuitry became small enough to fit
in the tiny gaps under the picture tube.

Also, cabinets were a carryover from radio days, when people
really liked having their radio look like a nice piece of
furniture.

I agree with you that the console television may have outlasted
it's attractiveness, but judging by the number of people today
who still buy big bulky "entertainment centers" in which to plop
the screen, there is still some preference for making the thing
look like a nice piece of furniture.
