ML> Dinner plates would not add useful information to the
ML> discussion (as Corning ware would also not). Surely,
GJ> Only to confirm negative results, unless the plates are porous enough
 GJ> to absorb food flavours.

I have perhaps discussed nonrandomized clinical trials here
in the past? The evidence of the neutral-tasting dinner plate
has been canonized in the body of knowledge perhaps almost as
long as that of lead in Roman wine. As far as porosity of
plates goes, that is not adding useful information to the
discussion, either. We all know that dirty plates taste dirty.

GJ> I have read somewhere - probably on this Echo - that contact with
GJ> stainless steel can ease the pain if soft, sensitive skin is subjected
GJ> to concentrated hot chili juice. There seems to be no logical reason
GJ> for that, but it seems to work, at least with me.

That is the background of the famous odor absorbers that used to
be advertised as a cureall for oniony hands and things like that.
You were supposed to rub your smelly skin with this miracle product,
and the odor would vanish. I don't know the mechanism - I'd have
thought that in order for the thing (a hand-size chunk of metal) to
work, it would either be reactive in some way or (more likely)
porous to a large degree.

GJ> In Jambi, Sumatura, I have seen a Catholic religious artifact shop
GJ> next to a Muslim shop selling framed copies of Q'ran tracts. When one
GJ> shop owner went off to get lunch, the other kept an eye on his shop.
GJ> All very peaceful and cooperative. Similarly in the days when the
ML> The question is what happens when someone declares fatwa or something,
ML> and it's not just the next door neighbor that one has to worry about,
ML> there's the loony down the block as well.
GJ> Out in those back blocks, they are a long way from politicians and
GJ> religious fanatics. The locals are too busy working to feed their
GJ> families to bother with such luxuries.

Again, you are introducing an extraneous factor. Or are responding
to a message in its isolation (as some do here) instead of in a
manner that is mindful of what went before in the thread (a reason
why I am a tiny bit sorry that my method of keeping track of
messages apparently interferes with threaded reading). We were
speculating on whether it would be possible to have a dual Kosher
and Halal facility - something that wouldn't be relevant to a set
of locals too busy working to feed their families to bother with such
luxuries.

The extraneous factor that you bring into this discussion is
"poverty and isolation."

Joint of Whale Meat Steeped in Red Wine Marinade
cat: odd, game
servings: 6 to 8

1 1/4 kg whale meat
2 ts salt
h - marinade
3 dl red wine
1 dl vegetable oil
3 ground cloves
1/2 ts coarsely ground pepper
h - gravy
750 mL cooking liquid
Thickening (milk and flour)
2 oz sour cream

It may be a good idea to bind the joint to help it keep in
good shape. Place it in a small oven dish and pour the marinade
over. Leave the joint there until the next day, turning it at
regular intervals. Remove the joint from the dish, dry it well
and rub it with salt. Cook the joint until it turns a pleasant
brown colour all over, turn down the heat and add water to reach
2-3 cm up the side of the joint, approx. 3/4 litre. Let the joint
simmer for about 20 min, turn it over and leave it for another
20 min. Measure enough of the juices to make enough marinade,
about 3/4 litre. Add the thickening to the marinade, and then
the sour cream to taste. Serve with boiled beans or other
vegetables, and potatoes - boiled or fried in the pan.
