I use all-season tires on my little truck; when there's more than a
couple inches of snow on the road I keep the hubs locked and shift
into 4WD if necessary.

Studded snows are still available here.  They are only allowed
on your car between 1-Nov and 31-Mar and the police will happily
pull you over and write a you a ticket for keeping studded tires
mounted out of season.

Studs are great for icy conditions.  But the secret to traveling
on snow is narrow tires which can bite through the snow.  Wide 
tires tend to "float" on the snow and don't have much control.
