Ärende: down the hatch!                                          [1]
====================================================================
Hi Hap,

 hn> Mele Kalikimaka Ruth!

Hope you're enjoying your white one. It's brown and warm here.

->  hn> efficient method. When there's a larger
->  hn> population on site, there's a meal plan.

-> So they should vet the potential grad student's cooking ability before
-> accepting. (G)

 hn> With today's population that might limit the
 hn> grad students severely!(grin). Although I'll
 hn> admit several dropped into the kitchen
 hn> while I was there to watch and ask questions,
 hn> so there is hope!!(g)

So maybe you ought to hire on as a cook/instructor?

-> hn> In the summer the area is full with
-> hn> tourists and vacationers, in the winter
-> hn> it's pretty isolated and very quiet.

-> I presume most of the students like the winter months better. They can
-> use the time to write up research done over the summer. Research like
-> what group of tourists get lobster red in the sun while others go only
-> to shrimp pink? That is marine life related, isn't it? (G)

 hn> Summers are not like the beaches in the Southeast,
 hn> or Hawaii (grin). Winter's tend to be a bit sunnier,

Beaches in the southeast don't compare to HI. The water is murky & the
sand is more of a tan than white.

 hn> summers are often cool and foggy. It is north of
 hn> San Francisco which is renowned for it's cool
 hn> foggy summers! Actually most folks perfer

I lived south of SF for a winter-it was a wet, grey one thanks to El
Nino. Didn't get a chance to experience summer--got there in early
September and left in early March.

 hn> the summer "field" season, there's LOTS of
 hn> activity and extremely interesting folks to
 hn> meet and listen to. All sorts of very VERY
 hn> interesting research projects going on. And
 hn> there's always a huge crop of undergraduates
 hn> running around learning "stuff"! (grin). You were

Sounds like an "interesting" time. (G)

 hn> quite right about the winter being the time
 hn> to write up and evaluate the data gathered
 hn> over the field season though! Most of that
 hn> is done behind closed doors and it's much
 hn> more quiet around the labs then!

As if everybody is in hibernation.

-> Somebody could make money opening up a small eatery specialising in just
-> breakfast and lunch. Probably not as much during the winter but make up
-> for it over the summer.

 hn> I suppose a "roach coach" might do fairly well
 hn> during the summer, but it's a long drive out to the
 hn> labs and there's nothing else around to make the
 hn> trip worth it.

So the students have to learn to cook or otherwise scavange food for
themselves.

-> hn> Amanda tries to get into Sebastopol at least
->  hn> every other week.

-> Did she when she first got there? I seem to recall you having to work at
-> her to stop working long enough to get a meal together.

 hn> GRIN, nope, when she first got there she
 hn> was her typical self...working about 18 hours
 hn> a day, 7 days a week, and thinking that she
 hn> was not working hard enough! (grin)...I am

And eating whatever she could put together with little thought so she
could get back to the books.

 hn> very pleased that she's finally getting to
 hn> the point where she sees the real value
 hn> in having that "off" time! Now she volunteers
 hn> with the Humane society at the shelter
 hn> every week and is getting involved with
 hn> things OTHER than the lab! She even
 hn> takes days off now and again! YAY!!

There's hope for her yet! Is this her last year here?

-> hn> I'm sure David is willing to share with
->  hn> Gradma and Grandpa!

-> Actually David is sharing with MIL and FIL; I suspect his parents as
-> well. Robert and Sarah would be the ones to share with Grandma &
-> Grandpa.

 hn> Duh! I knew that! For some reason I got
 hn> David and Robert confused!

No big deal right now. The box was a Harry & David's (?, could be some
other gourmet place) with a half dozen biscotti, a bag of moose munch
and a half dozen assorted truffles.

->  hn> don't eat much pasta anymore.
 hn> ->
-> OTOH, we have it in some form every week to 10 days and could have it
-> more often. Steve could eat it every day of the week--but then be
-> working it off. It's in his blood, remember?
