Ärende: How was your Christmas?
===============================
-=> Quoting hap newsom to Nancy Backus on 01-02-09 08:32 <=-

 -> -> My youngest brother brought those of us who enjoy a fine single malt
 -> -> a Christmas present to share, a bottle of 17-y-old Rum Cask Balvenie.
 ->
 -> hn> I have a friend in England who has some and he paid
 ->  hn> 65pounds for it, that's about $130 or so U$. Not the
 -> hn> priciest, but not a bargain hunters's delight either!
 ->
 -> I rather gathered it might be in that range... :)
 ->
 hn> It's sort of the dividing line between the
 hn> good stuff, and the "really" good stuff (grin).

Good to know.

 hn> Single malt prices have come down in the last
 hn> 5 years or so, my glenmorangie used to be
 hn> over $100 and now it's down around $60 or so.

As I don't buy very often, it seemed to me that prices were still going
up. Of course, the price I "remember" paying for mine is probably the
one more like 10-20 years ago... (G)

 hn> Here's an experiment for you; next time
 hn> you plan to have some good single malt, also
 hn> plan to have a really good quality dark chocolate
 hn> to enjoy with it. The chocolate and the scotch
 hn> really seem to enhance each other. I try to look
 hn> for chocolate that is 65% or higher.

I'll keep that in mind for the next time. :)

 -> hn> he must have loved you all very much to share that much
 -> hn> single malt with everyone! I generally only offer my singles
 -> hn> to those who express an interest in single malts. Everyone
 ->  hn> else gets offered a blend.
 -> He got it specially, knowing that his other brother also greatly
 -> appreciates the really good stuff... and that that is just about my only
 -> drink. The fourth person that was making inroads was the sister who was
 -> hostessing the event. :) Those that came in and wanted to taste
 -> probably wouldn't have even tried a blend, but the single malt intrigued
 -> them enough for a taste from one of our glasses... ;)
 ->
 hn> The first thing I tell folks is "it's still SCOTCH"!
 hn> If they don't like scotch, they more than likely
 hn> won't go crazy over the single malts.

Well, that was certainly made clear right along... some of the tasters
were the "just become legal in the last few years" crew, that have known
all along that we of the older generation were Scotch, especially single
malt, drinkers... so now they can be more than just curious and
sniffers. Mind you this was all family... (G)

 hn> Dale is a good example, he tried one of my single
 hn> malts when we had the last great crab Jacuzzi, and
 hn> while I think he was intrigued by it, I think he'd
 hn> have traded the single malt for just about any
 hn> decent bourbon (which he does like).

I brought a new bottle of Glenlivet 12 to the latest Picnic at Janis's,
particularly since Dale, watching the conversation here in the echo
beforehand about the single malts, said he'd be willing to taste it if
it showed up. :) Again, he seemed appreciative, but not converted. ;)
He did, however, connect it to what he probably had had when in England
and visiting a certain older Scottish friend there.

 -> As I came in the door of my sister's house, this brother came right over
 -> beaming at me, put his arm around me, and told me I had to come see what
 -> he'd brought as a special Christmas present... He, Mary Grace and Rob
 -> already had glasses going... :) And, just for the record, the party
 -> started at about noon, and didn't really break up until well after 6 pm.
 -> Plenty of time to sip away the whole bottle... ;) I do think that my
 -> brothers got the lion's share of it, though.
 ->
 hn> I am not really much of a drinker, but when I'm
 hn> going to have a drink I'd at least prefer to have
 hn> what I enjoy. I probably only have about a shot
 hn> or less of scotch every couple of weeks or so.

I guess I'm even less of a drinker than you... and I certainly agree
about IF I'm going to drink, I'd prefer it to be what I enjoy. :)
Normally I wouldn't have anything for months on end... unless one of my
brothers comes to visit (which is not that frequent) or it's something
special, like this Christmas's offering, or perhaps when the whole
family is doing their annual camping.

 hn> Every now and then I'll go on a "binge" and have
 hn> a shot three or four days in a row, but that
 hn> never really happens very often (grin). I think my
 hn> next bottle will be the maCallan 18. It will more
 hn> than likely last more than a year.

I think I had 2-3 doubleshots total of this Christmas present, and then
I did kill off (maybe a half shot or less) my old bottle of Macallen 12
to celebrate the New Year coming in. But the last time I had anything
was in August, at the Picnic and then at my family's camping that next
week. My bottles generally last for years... 3, 4, sometimes more.
Once in a blue moon I have a hankering for a wee drap without the usual
stimuli, but that's about it. ;) I've still got most of that bottle of
Glenlivet I bought for the picnic, for that matter. :) Won't be buying
anything for quite a while, I'm sure.
