Take out the eff and ess aitch words, and it would likely be

You keep trying to saddle this creature upon us. Why? Are
there no Foxes in Australia? Or is reporting the news there
as easy as ABC?

If I had my druthers it'd be a very small celebration, perhaps
delivered at extremely high velocity by an explosive charge.

   If young Rupert inherits his mother's

For the first couple years, his activity was reluctantly sponsored
by Penfolds, but then - after receiving extremely bad notices in
the press - he was forbidden from making it. He continued on anyhow,
using his own resources, and sometime in the late '50s I think his
style was validated by internationally respected tastings and
judgings, and Penfolds then reversed its corporate decision.

 That was a different generation of
 GJ> wine makers.  Now, the competent ones follow the company line much

Perhaps so. Which is why "garagiste" wines are sometimes
sought after - the trained winemakers make more personal
statements in the stuff they make when off duty - same as
Max Schubert did.

 A few, such as the late, respected Ray Ward, go off on
 GJ> their own to follow their own dreams.

A grubby little winery, a demented wife, a few hardscrabble acres.
Such is life. And aside from his natural cantankerousness, his
talent was probably equal to that of Peter or Wolf. Peter spoke
of him with great respect as a peer and colleague, in fact.

 What they produce can be
 GJ> magnificent, but because it is generally unknown, it sells for a price
 GJ> related to the cost of production, rather than the market-inflated
 GJ> figures that Grange, Hill of Grace and others go for.

Ray claimed his wine was equal to the fifty-dollar bottles.
I disagree, for two reasons. First, there's too much bottle
variation; and second, there was, even in his Reserve Shiraz,
too little tannin to promote long aging. That said, I was
delighted to find a last bottle of the stuff, which sad to
relate will probably not make the return journey: though
perhaps there may still be a bottle or two of the same that
I kept for a special occasion down in Blair Athol?

For now drinking, I thought his wine equal to Peter Lehmann's
prestige labels, with the possible exception of Stonewell,
which was perhaps the fifty-dollar bottle of which he was
referring (though at the time, the Penfold and Henschke tops
of the line were not much more than that, I think).

Something to go with a moderately good glass of red wine:

Easy cheese straws
cat: starter
yield: 36

2 c shredded sharp Cheddar
1/3 c butter
1 ts Worcestershire
1/4 ts cayenne
1/4 ts dry mustard
1/4 ts salt (opt)
1 c flour

Oven at 400F.

Blend cheese and butter. Add seasonings. Mix in flour.
Chill 30 min or longer.

Roll dough by tablespoons into 10" ropes and cut in
half to form straws. Place on cookie sheets. Chill in
freezer until straws are firm, 30 min. Then bake 8-10 min.
Cool and serve.
