Hi Janis,

JK> Aw, no, you have to have nice soft stretchy cheese haha

But the flavor of the cheese whan it is brown is so good!

JK> > No, my dad said that spaghetti was a "foreign" food to his parents.
JK> > They were very much meat and potatoes eaters and he's the same way.

JK> Ron's mom and dad were the same way. Meat and potatoes was about it
JK> for them :) Ron's dad actually did most of the cooking, and he was
JK> pretty good at it (smile). In my house though, the only time my Mom
JK> made potatoes was when Dad was working at the hospital. When Dad was
JK> home, he wanted pasta and there was no other way about it.. talk about
 JK> hard-headed haha

My mom did (and does) about all the cooking. But talk about being hard
headed--a few years ago in one of the weekly letters they wrote about
being out of potatoes one Sunday before dinner. There was some (old)
rice on the shelf but I guess they went to several stores looking for,
and finally finding, potatoes. I've bought more out here than I have in
the last few years but even then they aren't a staple. OTOH, rice and
pasta are. (G)

>> Neat :) I knew there had to be some Italian blood over there

 JK> > Now you know. (G)

JK> Ron's family is mostly Dutch, with some german, some irish and of
JK> course his mom's english heritage.. oh and his dad has some Indians
 JK> there too .. so he's a definite mixed breed :)

Not quite a Heinz 57 tho. (G)

JK> > Probably so. I made some brussels sprouts in a cheese sauce years
JK> ago > that Steve thought were OK but generally I'll get my "fix" of

JK> Ron loves that kind of stuff (grin). I'm willing to try anything once
 JK> generally (g)

I'll generally give vegetables a try and do like most of them (except
sweet potatoes and lima beans primarily). Abotu 10 years ago in AZ (at a
church pot luck) I had a good yellow squash, tomato, onion and cheese
dish--I wish I knew who made it because I've not found anything quite
like it in any of my cook books nor have I been able to successfully
replicate it (and Steve doesn't care for yellow summer squash so I
can't try too often).

>> dad's > side (the one who came to the States) was the youngest of
>> something like > 10 sons.

>> Can you imagine that house <grin>.. I guess it was more the case than
>> not in those days.

JK> > Very much so! The fact that they all grew to adulthood is amazing.

JK> That is very true. I know my grandmother lost two children way back,
JK> but still had 6 survive. Ron's dad came from a family of 4 sisters
 JK> and 4 brothers.. that's a large family :)

And Steve's dad is one of 11 children. Several have passed away but
there are some I've not met, even after 32 years of marriage.

>> but when you run into someone who was connected somehow, it makes
>> history so much more real.

JK> > It's the 6 degrees of separation type thing.

JK> Did you see the article in the news yesterday that some percentage of
JK> peole in the UK think that Churchill was a "myth", and Sherlock Holmes
JK> was "real"? Now I know it matters how they asked the question in their
JK> survey, but boy was that shocking.

No I didn't see that. Every so often I'll watch Jay Leno on Friday
nights if he does his "Jay Walking" segment. The pure ignorance of so
many people is astounding! Scary in some ways too.

>> > worker when I sent off that package about a thermo-nuclear device
>> (the > hot sauce) in it; that was shortly after Saddam was captured.
>> She got > varied (funny/interesting) reactions with the guys she
>> shared it with in > her unit.

>> I bet :)

JK> > With a request for more but we couldn't fulfill it in the time they
 JK> had > left.

 JK> Understand.

The unit came back 100% intact.
