===================
Hi Nancy,

 NB> on... :) RH>> And probably thought afterward--"how could I have been
NB> so dumb?". NB>> Or at least, "Not going to make THAT mistake
 NB> again...!" :)

RH> IOW, a good learning experience.

 NB> Yup.

That's how we all learn. (G)

RH> Military commissaries have baggers; it's usually an entry level job
RH> for teens or older people looking to make a few $$. They work for tips
RH> only, no military funds are used to pay them. Some folks are lousy
RH> tippers, some over generous. I try to be somewhere in between, basing
RH> it on the # of bags filled. We went yesterday; used our 4 bags plus 7

NB> Sounds like it was well earned. :) Theoretically all know that they
NB> are only working for tips..?

Yes, but some people don't give that much money, figuring it's "just"
sacking and bringing them out to the car. It can be hard work if it's a
big order with lots of heavy stuff. I've increased how much I pay over
the years as Steve has gotten pay raises & risen in rank.

RH> True, and some do try and put as much heavy stuff (canned goods) into
RH> a bag as possible. Others will split the amount of canned goods over
RH> several bags and fill the rest with lighter items. Those you have to

NB> We try to set up things on the belt to help get things into the bags
NB> more efficiently. Like keeping all the frozen together, along with
NB> the refrigerated... and spacing out the cans/bottles with the

We try to at least get the frozens and perishables together, then go
with other things in clusters.

 NB> lighter-weight boxes/bags of stuff for the non-perishables... The
NB> other reason we tend to do our own bagging is to pack things in
NB> solidly so the bag isn't
 NB> tipsy or topheavy...

We can only do it at the self check out lanes.

RH> We reuse the paper bags at home in my sewing room waste basket and
 RH> collecting non paper recycleables.

NB> Ok, when they are almost ready to fall apart, they get used to collect
NB> the recyclables... sometimes they need to be rearranged, so that the
NB> split seams aren't in the same places... (G) We use the occasional
NB> plastic bag that shows up here to line the wastebaskets, usually.

We're trying to accumulate fewer plastic bags but it's easier said than
done. I'll wrap them into a ball, toss into a collection bag and take
that to our church pre school or a recycle spot when there's a bag full.

NB> NB>> dollar per, so we've picked up 4-5 of them... they aren't as
NB> sturdy NB>> as canvas, tho.

RH> We've seen them all over the place. I've got one that I got at the
RH> local JoAnn's Fabrics but don't use it for grocery shopping. It's not
RH> as strong as the others--better for fabric store trips. (G)

NB> These appear to be at least as strong as doubled paper, even holding a
NB> bit more, but are also appearing only to last about as well as our
NB> well re-used paper... We had had high hopes that they might have been
 NB> more
NB> durable, but that doesn't quite seem to be the case.

That's how they get you to buy more. Therefore I'd spend a bit of money
at a fabric store and make my own, sturdier ones. (G)
