So true! We used a forked stick for that.
Old scouting method. two forked sticks 
on either side of the fire with one straight one
going between the Y forks...and one stick 
with forks going towards each other and 
hung on the cross stick with the cook pot
hooked to the bottom V fork.
I hope I explained that right.
