Ärende: RE: Computerized checkou
================================
 -=> On 03-08-09  19:37,  Dave Sacerdote <=-
-=> spoke to Hap Newsom about RE: Computerized checkout <=-

DSh> I refuse to use computerized checkouts.

 DSac> Why?

 HN> I also refuse to use them...because there's
 HN> no benefit to me.

DSac> The most tangible benefit to me is that I get to speedily
DSac> check myself out without waiting in a line.

Not here -- the lines at the self-check out are often as large as at the
regular manned checkouts.

HN> The store gets to eliminate
 HN> a checker or two,

DSac> At the two supermarkets in my home town where self-service
DSac> checkouts are in use, they were installed in ADDITION to
DSac> the full-service checkouts; no jobs were lost. In fact,
DSac> additional people were retained, because there is one
DSac> cashier specifically assigned to oversee the self-service
DSac> checkouts, rendering assistance as needed (whether with
DSac> recalcitrant items or to bag for the customers if they
 DSac> wish.)

No one volunteers to bag for you in our stores.

Definitely not true here. The grocery stores replaced manned checkouts
with self-service checkouts, and they now operate fewer manned checkouts
than before. In the grocery stores, if there is any one who monitors
the self service check outs, it is at most one person for four stations.

HN> and they get me to do their
 HN> work for them.

DSac> As I noted, your labor isn't used as a replacement for
DSac> anyone. It simply offers you another checkout option
DSac> (one which you choose not to exercise.)

Not true. By us using our labor, they don't have to pay staff to do
the job. They get our labor for free.

HN> If they were to offer a cash discount
HN> if you used the computerized checkout I might
 HN> consider it.

DSac> Non sequitur. All checkouts are computerized. The only
DSac> difference is that you, rather than a cashier, are passing
 DSac> items over the scanner.

You know what he meant.

DSac> Supermarkets already operate on razor-thin margins. I
DSac> can't imagine that there is much cash savings in offering
 DSac> self-service checkouts, especially because - as I noted
DSac> earlier - they augment, rather than replace, employee-operated
 DSac> checkout lanes.

That is not true here. In stores with self-service stations, they have
fewer people running manned stations than they used to have.

 HN> I don't use ATM's either, I need
HN> cash I go to the Bank and see a teller and
HN> get some of my money. Sure if I want $$
HN> on Sunday night I'm outta luck..but if
 HN> I can't use a credit card or don't have
 HN> the cash...I'll wait.

 DSac> Why?

DSac> My whole family is on a first-name basis with every employee of
DSac> the bank branch where we do all of our banking. But I still use
DSac> the ATMs when necessary. On particularly busy days at the bank,
DSac> I can walk past the line to use the ATM and still wave "hello"
DSac> at the tellers, who smile and wave back.

DSac> What purpose is served by deliberately inconveniencing yourself?

It is not an inconvenience for me. I have no need of an ATM. I rarely
get any fresh cash. If I withdraw $200 from my credit union, it will
last me for several months. Couple that with the fact that many ATM's
charge exorbitant fees if you are not with the "right" bank, and I just
don't have any need for them.

DSac> Just out of curiosity, do you only go to full-service
DSac> gas pumps? Because that is a TRUE example of a self-
DSac> service option that does indeed cost jobs.

Only in New Jersey -- where it is the law. Every where else, I would
have a hard time finding a full service pump anymore.

In addition, the few gas stations that offer a choice do so only at a
considerable premium in price for using full-service. The grocery and
other retail stores using self-service checkouts are not giving any
discount for using them, nor charging a premium for using the manned
checkouts. Your analogy fails on those counts.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Milk Chocolate and Orange Truffles
 Categories: Candy
      Yield: 21 servings

    1/2 c Whipping cream
     24 oz Milk chocolate (imported)
           - finely chopped
      2 tb Unsalted butter
1 1/2 ts Grated orange peel
           Unsweetened cocoa powder
      2 ts Solid vegetable shortening

Line a cookie sheet with foil. Bring cream to simmer in heavy medium
saucepan. Reduce heat to low. Add half the chocolate and whisk until
melted. Whisk in butter and orange peel. Freeze until chocolate
mixture is firm enough to mound on spoon, about 40 minutes.

Drop mixture by rounded tablespoons onto foil-lined sheet, spacing
apart. Freeze until almost firm but still pliable, about 30 minutes.
Roll each in cocoa powder. Then roll between palms of hands into
ball. Place on same sheet. Freeze until firm, about 1 hour.

Melt remaining half of chocolate with shortening in top of double
boiler over simmering water, stirring until smooth. Remove mixture
  from over water.  Grasp 1 truffle between thumb and index finger;
roll truffle in melted chocolate, coating completely. Shake to
remove excess chocolate. Place truffle on same foil-lined sheet.
Repeat with remaining truffles. Refrigerate until coating is firm,
  about 1 hour.

Dust truffles with cocoa powder, brush off excess. (Can be prepared 2
weeks ahead. Store in refrigerator in an air-tight container.) Let
stand at room temperature 10 minutes and serve.
