Usually the grapes are in a bulk bin, and the customer puts his
selection in a "tear-off" plastic bag.  Sometimes the grapes are sour,
which is the fault of the store, and sometimes, if not labelled
"seedless", customers want to test for seedlessness.  IMO, the red
grapes with seeds have better flavour than the seedless.  I happily
swallow the seeds.

Justifiably so.  As I mentioned to MLoo, some small food items have, by
long custom, been acceptable for picking at to taste, while others (eg
truffles, larger fruit and items like nuts and jelly beans known to be
invariable in quality) have not.  A large grape is about the same size
as a small prune plum, but I doubt if prune tasting would be considered
as acceptable as grape tasting.

Here, separated mandarin sections are often offered by market
stall-holders for tasting as evidence of quality.  Some years ago, in
preparation for making a salad for the 2002 Echo picnic, Joan and I
were looking for tomatoes with good flavour in a small supermarket in
Danvers, so asked an attendant, who brought out a large, "ugly" tomato
and cut it for us to sample.  It was good, so we bought more than we
really needed just for the salad.  That sort of service is appreciated!

      Title: Tomatoes Forever Salad
 Categories: Newsgroups, May.rec
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      3    Cloves garlic
           ;sliced
      2 tb Olive oil
      1 tb Balsamic vinegar
      1 ts Minced fresh rosemary
           ;or 1/2 tsp. dried
    1/4 ts Salt
      4 lg Red or yellow tomatoes
           ;cut into wedges
      2 c  Red or yellow cherry
           Tomatoes
      1 c  Red or yellow pear tomatoes
 
  In skillet over medium heat, cook garlic in hot oil 2 minutes or until
  golden. Pour into bowl and let cool. Whisk in vinegar, rosemary and
  salt. Add tomatoes; toss to coat. If desired, arrange on platter in
  spiral pattern.
  
  Work time: 10 min. Total time: 10 min.
